58mm - primoplan or biotar?

Hello! If anyone has an opinion between these two lenses, I'd like to hear your considerations.

From the shots I've seen, both lenses seem to produce a bit of the swirl bokeh, which is my ultimate aim from this purchase, though the Biotar has looked a bit sharper in shots I've seen.

I'd probably decide by which ever came along in better shape at the 'bay (I was watching a prima there now, which made me ask).

Thanks,

K.

czj lenses 99% sharper than meyer I can't decide which one is better from 58mm lenses, from 75mm biotar is clearly winner.

Thanks Attila. I was very lucky to recently acquire a 75. Luis has sent along one of his handbuilt exa - K adapters and then I'll be set.

Still though, swirly bokeh has my interest and having more options to make it at different focal lengths would be great.

Both lenses are pretty sharp - if you want to see some photos, enter here:

Maybe the Biotar is a bit sharper at F/2 than Primoplan at F/1.9, but the difference isn't very noticeable. You can find more photos from the Primoplan here:

CZJ Biotar is more popular so easier to grab one (excepting black version), Primoplan is rather rare. I can't decide which from these two lenses is my favourite Very Happy

Its weird. When I started collecting only several years ago I remember the primoplan was going for peanuts. Since I had a trusty helios, I passed. Now it has shot up quite a bit and I regret it. Could of made a 50-60 dollar profit.

Thanks for the links Hubert. I recalled your shots with the Primoplan in the second link. Andy suggested I look up some of your work on this forum when I was researching the 100/2.8, which I ultimately bought largely on the basis of your autumn shots with it. This was how I also found the second link, which added to the dilemma of whether or not to get the Biotar or Primoplan.

I guess the deciding factor - have you noticed if one exhibits more 'swirliness' than the other?

Kelly.

Hard to say, I'll must to do a test in the same conditions, using the same subject. If you want, in the weekend I'll take some test pictures in my garden. It should settle the matter Smile

I got my Primoplan about 6 months ago, very cheap (less than $10) as it came with a broken Praktica.

I had both. The Biotar was better, with more fresh colours and less soft wide open.

I've got them all in original 40.5mm version. Biotar has greater contrast rather than sharper defination. Both are great, but, I love Primoplan better.

Guys all of you seem to have found primoplan quite cheap too.
I have not been able to find it for a long time now.
If any do post in MFL/market place..

Alessandro has beautiful samples from both, he has even posted them on the forum.
