Today I had some time off and managed to shoot some comparison shots with my Eos 7D equipped with Zeiss CY lenses vs a modified 7D which allows to use cine PL mount lenses.
Both cameras shooting Raw,
both focused on a siemens star chart with 10x magnify help

Raw shooting full resolution 18MP,
same stop,
same shutter,
same post processing

and both cameras on tripods

the candidates:

A: 2.8/25mm Zeiss CY MM Version vs 1.2/ 25 Zeiss HS vs 1.9/24mm Ultra Prime vs a 1.8/25mm Red Pro Prime

B: 1.4/50mm Zeiss CY MM Version vs 1.2/ 50 Zeiss HS vs 1.9/50mm Ultra Prime vs a 1.8/50mm Red Pro Prime

Of course it is not a scientific test, (I shot a shelf) and it is somehow unfair to compare them as the cine lenses are newer and cost approx x10-20 more than the CY.

But if you always wanted to know how big the differences are, please let me know and I will post some results later.

Wow! What a fascinating set of gear!

Of course we are interested in the differences. Wink

But once you have shot the Siemens Star, I would be very interested in how those lenses perform in "real" photographic situations, indoors and outdoors.

you should compare a 25mm on FF vs a 15mm on crop
and a 50mm on FF vs a 30mm on crop

Sorry, I completely disagree with you. This way it would be the same angle of view but a completely different distortion and Space feeling. Keep in mind Cinema cameras are more APS than FF. 35mm Cinema lenses do NOT cover FF!

sorry agent_cooper, I misread and thought it was a about 5DII vs 7D

finally I found the time to evaluate the test.

one regular Eos 7D on tripod, beside a modified 7D with PL Mount.

same stop, same shutter, shooting raw no sharpening, no special PP.

the subject ca 3,50m distance:

100% crops

Astonishingly disappointing I would dare to say! Certainly not my
experience with Zeiss lenses, but I never tested cine lenses
(except my Kinoptiks - and I would bet they beat that).

I'm sorry that you have such a poor copy of the Distagon 25mm.
You have been very unlucky, even my AE copy of the lens (which I sold years ago) gave a lot better results wide open than what you are showing here.

Yes indeed. I had the new 25mm Z series and my friend and
I did some testing years ago on teh optical bench also using
a Siemens star, and indeed found that it resolved close to 400lpm.

yes indeed, the 25 was a bad copy. Since this test I bought another one with serial number #81... Shocked Laughing which performs much better in terms of flare and sharpness. But CA remains the same.

And thats the point: The test cleary shows the abundance of CA with my Zeiss CY glas. Since I used all lenses with a Eos sensor it proves the problem is not due sensor bloom because all other lenses (HS, Ultra Prime, Red Prime) perform better.
