Finally got round to trying the Zenitar on the D700:

Above the head, relying on live view:

A bit lower down:

And minimizing distortion by shooting horizontal (no distortion correction, just cropped out foreground and a little sky):

Nice ones, Richard! (You should update your sig line.) Looks like we have
another digital full-framer in the group. Looking forward to seeing some
more from this cam/lens. Smile

I think it was around f16, but the lens is pretty good from 5.6 onwards and very useable at f4, just okay wide open.

Nice presentation.
You did a great job of lining up that last one.
Hoping to do a side by side comparison with the zenitar and super tak 4/17 soon.
These show really well for the zeener.

Congrats Richard for the nice samples.
You are luck to have a Zenitar that is good at f/4 - mine is pretty indecent until f/8

I think it's a lens that suffers greatly from sample variation.

At f4 edge performance isn't great but central sharpness is pretty good which is why I'd describe it as very useable - I don't consider edge performance of a fisheye as important as edge performance of a rectilinear wide. At 5.6 central sharpness is very good and edge sharpness good and gets better f8-f11 with no decline at f16. Obviously these are subjective judgements!

I bought mine used but mint in box for about £80, and I think the new price of about £100 is pretty fair if you get a good sample. I wouldn't pay anymore for a fisheye even if the performance was better, as it's not a lens that I'm likely to regularly use, but it's nice to have in the arsenal...
