Strange beast usable full frame. 1.6/92mm. Used hend-held so surely some tilt/shift effect.

Looks nice apart from some contrast loss (maybe it was used handheld). What lens is this, do you have some photos of it?

I am pretty sure this is the same thing: Click here to see on Ebay.de . Mine is marked Zeiss Jena 1Q but here we can't tell what's on the left. This is rear element on the photo. In front there is much bigger one Smile. Contrast is low true.

Thanks! I don't know the optical scheme of the lens, but in the past many projection lenses were of the Petzval type. Could this lens be of the Petzval type too?

Sadly i didn't pay enough attention to design when cleaning condensation between elements but i am sure there are at lease two on both ends so you might be right.

Lens is cool since it covers FF and little beyond (like 1.2x). That makes it very useful for TS adaptation. If you remove middle barrel and join front and back parts together directly you get a bit wider angle without additional distortion (check photos before after).

One would need to cut away 2mm material on the back for easier TS use. Now if you glue back of lens with EOS / M42 adapter without any space that gives you exactly infinity.

#5 bokeh clearly speaks for a Petzval design.

Indeed, I have seen quite a few Petzval shots in the last few weeks, and it looks like it.

Is it useful for TS adaptations? I think that the "swirlies" will get more severe when the lens is moved out of the optical axis.

Very interesting indeed.

You may even be able to create a focusing mount for that.

Hi guys,

sorry to disappoint you, but the Visionar is a 6 lens / 6 element Gauss type, where the usually cemented 2nd and 3rd element were split into single lenses to create further "air space" between the lenses which was be used to further correct and improve coma and astigmatism.

A scan of the cross section can be found on page 55 of the Carl zeiss Jena Yearbook 1960, Part 1, when this series of powerfull high aperture lenses was first announced. The top of the range Visionar is the 1 : 1,9 / 200 mm with a 4.1" front element, quite impressive.
The resolution of the Visionar is good enogh for high ISO digital Bodies, it is about 10 µm within the 20mm center circle and gradually falls off to 20 µm at the edge of a 30mm circle. It was designed for 35 mm projection (large cinemas, drive in typ etc.) format with approx 18 x 24 mm, half of the full frame Leica format.

Anybody interested in more details please feel free to contact me.

Great info Georg, thanks.

I have the 1.9/168 Visionar and it is very large and heavy, hard to hand hold but it works.

Sadly mine had lots of fungus and although I managed to clean it, the golden coloured coatings on the rear surface have been mostly etched away. I haven't managed to get really sharp results from it.

Dear all,

took some strong textile tape and bonded one of my Visionar s , the 1,9 / 141 onto the M39 Adapter of my NEX
to make some quick shots:
Pict with bird, managed to get the razor thin focus on the eye
Pict focus on edge of oil painting canvas
Pict plain white wall, out of focus in search of vignetting
Two pict. of lens and body to show how...

As the lens has no aperture all at 1:1,9, quite amazing with 50 l/mm resolution in the 20mm center circle and
no obvious color fringing at the light/dark borders and no serious vignetting effect towards the corners.
This would not be possible with 3 or 4 lenses only.

Think I have to make a fokus adapter for this lens next....

Nice shots, shows the excellent IQ of the Visionar. I just wish I had a smaller one that the colossal 162mm one i have, it's so big and heavy I never use it.
