Some time ago I bought a Canon EOS 50e from Orio. That is a wonderful cam and it worked like a charm. There were some problems with some manual lenses or rather with adapters and it sucked out battery life, but a battery grip helped and after a while I knew which adapters work.

But then, about a year ago, it seized to work. The camera constantly showed "MF" in the display even with an AF-lens attached and it did not react to anything, no shutter fired, nothing. Sad Must be some kind of internal electronic fault.

OK, these things happen with old gear, I thought and accepted it.

Meanwhile I got a Canon EOS 300 and realized again that the EOS film cams are a joy to use and I wanted my 50e to work again. But nothing helped. And I did not want to give it to a repair man, because this would have been way too expensive.

About two weeks ago then, I discovered during my weekly rambles through the vast realm of EBay a defective 50e. The auction text said that the little loop is broken that holds the small catch of the back cover and keeps the cover locked. No film could be shot because of the open back cover.

I sensed a chance and won the cam for only €9,-!!

When I got it, I was able to replace the broken capture mechanism of the EBAY cam with the one of Orio's cam. And voilá: it worked. The "new" cam powered up and the shutter fired. "YES!!" I thought.

But then, when I loaded a film I realized that it did not recognize the film roll and did not advance the film. "Oh no!"

What now?

Our friend the internet helped. I have found a discussion about a similar problem from 2003. There one guy found out that when replacing the capture mechanism lock it can happen that a contact element inside is bent and thus does not signal the camera any more that a film is loaded.
So, I opened the cam again and, indeed, that was the problem.

I just corected it and now I have a perfectly working EOS 50e in a very nice condition (plus another 50e for spare parts, just in case).

Yipppieeeehhh!

congrats! nice to see it working again
better is to avoid Canon bodies, I also have a EOS3 who doesn't start but I don't plan to buy a second one to fix it, I prefer to use my Contax bodies

I've been using Planar lenses from my two Contax bodies on my Panny L1 (the f1.4 and the f1.7) but wondered what Contax bodies you used?

Mine are the humble 137MA and MD models.. they are both nice (with replaced leather) but I wondered if later bodies offer more?

Thanks

Doug

You're right. I wouldn't have bought another one if I hadn't got it for only €9,-. I guess that's worth it.
I agree, Contax bodies (as many non-electronic ones) are more reliable than EOS models. Wink

Well done Carsten! Great idea. You did really well, because more modern cameras with plastic parts and complicated circuitry are far more difficult to repair than old mechanical ones. Hope to see some pics from it soon. Smile

Great job! The feeling when you resurrect a piece of equipment from the dead is really wonderful.

Congratulations! I am happy that my 50e did not turn out to be a complete disaster for you.

No, it didn't, Orio. Even if I hadn't been able to use it any more, it still would have shown me that it is a fantastic cam! Really worth having.

Peter, you can only understand that if you are a fan of "Home Improvement" the comedy series in which a Tim Taylor works for a company called "Binford".
It's hilarious! The humour is pretty close to "Two and a half men", I'd say.

Ah, OK, thanks for explaining, it makes sense now. I'm not much of a TV watcher but I do look at the schedules and I've never even heard of either of these shows before now. Possibly they're on Sky, I don't have that.

"Two and a half men" is a present show, "Home Improvement" was broadcasted in the 90s.

Perhaps more "honest" and down to earth...
