death (catchy name!) I had a Nikkor 28mm/3.5 that had awful CA, so I am leery. The one I had was not AI (older).
I've never owned third party brands. Are they good?

You could consider the Vivitar 19/3.8 which is fairly good on a crop body. Available in most of the usual mounts.

Ai and AIS 28/3.5 are significantly better than non-Ai versions. I have the "K" version as well as the AIS one, and there's no comparison in corner sharpness between them.
