Bought this for a song recently and have only now used the lens.

The first thing that I noticed when viewing it from the back was the flat rear element.
For other lenses this can be indicative of a Tomioka build.
I am wondering if that is the case here.
It is interesting but in the scheme of things not as important as its performance, which is good.
Here is the lens:

And here are some quick piccies - the first two at f1.4, the last at f4:

As much a Tomioka as the other 55/1.4's seen on the other branded cameras of the time.
I'm convinced they are the same design from the same sources, but YMMV, who knows.

Thanks Luis.
I gave this lens a little test through the apertures this afternoon.
I can't remember all of them exactly but they start at f1.4 and go through to around f11.
You get the idea.

Thanks Mo - yes I think so.
It is easy to use and everything about its operation feels natural.
It is certainly one of the better 1.4/55's I think.
OH

PS - I have just noticed in your signature that you have one of these so I am preaching to the choir Very Happy

You are indeed,The All Metal Auto Rikenons were some of the first lenses I bought/collected/used ,if you can grab a 50/1.7.

It looks very similar to my Auto Sears 55/1.4, except the alignment of the parts is slightly different. The quality is the same, not very sharp wide open, but still really good in general, and it feels great in my hand.

Are you sure the rear element is completely flat? All Rikenons of this vintage I saw before had slightly convex element. It could be difficult to distinguish unless you compare it to the lens with really flat rear element.

Yes that is a good question.
It certainly looks flat at first blush.
I held a paper edge against it and there is a slight convex curve.
Interestingly, I then held a paper edge against the Tomioka Chinon and it has a very very slight convex curve as well - hardly perceptible but much less than the Rikenon. So even the Tomioka is not perfectly flat.
But they are not the same.

Thank you Nordentro.
I have another Cosina made lens - the Revuenon 1.2/55
It is also a very good performer.
Some Cosina lenses are not well regarded while others are fine.
That would be a discussion for another thread I think.
In the meantime this lens is very nice.

I think that you are right.
The Sears and the Ricoh seem to be the same camera and same lens.

I use to have this Rikenon as well and it is equal to the Cosinon. I agree, it is a good lens indeed.

Sounds like a favourite of yours Mo.
On searching for sample images from the web I find many splendid examples.
Here is a link to one such:

I will keep my eyes peeled for a good copy if I can find one.

They are often found on the camera, the Ricoh TLS and go for reasonable prices.
