I have the 58 1.4, and while I like the overall image quality, I found that the Konica Hexanon 57 1.4 to have similar qualities but easier to use on my Nex...the konica being smaller in size. But recently I bought a Topcon Re 58 1.8 (silver version), which is much smaller, and possibly the sharpest of any 50ish lens that I own.
What I also like about the 1.8 is the focus throw. With the Nex "peak" focusing one can see how the focus travels outwards, and the area covered, in respective f-stops. It is really an overlooked aspect, I think, of a lens, because this relates to it's ability to isolate a subject. So, the 1.8 has much area in front of the subject and behind that is out of focus (if open)...remarkable lens.
Mine had a stiff focus mechanism (completely frozen at first) but the more I work it the easier it is.
I will try to post some comparisons in the near future. _________________ Cameras; Sony Nex5n Lenses; Konica Hexanons; 21mm f2.8, 40mm f1,8, 50mm f1.4, 50mmf1.7,57mm f1.4, 100mm f2.8, 135mm f3.2, 200mm f4, MC Helios 77M-4 50mm f1.8, Jupiter 8 50 f2, Super Takumar 85mm f1.9, Vivitar Series 1 90mm f2.5 (Macro), Steinheil Munchen Culminar 85mm f2.8, Steinheil Munchen Exagon 35mm f2.8, Jupiter 37A 135mm, Astra Berlin 135mm f3.5, Angenieux 180mm f4 , Tair 3-PhS 300mm f4.5

Woodrim, gorgeous blue.
Lightshow as requested some wide open with busyish background from the 58mm 3.8 macro. The first is a fairly small snail against some moss.
and change to vivid mode in camera.

No, high, like around noon, when the light is harsh, you get stuff like CA, but in low contrast light like in the shade or on overcast days the color is great, blues reds and yellows all pop. _________________ A Manual Focus Junky...

As a macro specialist, this caught my eye. Having done some searches, I find that it gets no mention in leading macro forums.

I have never heard of a 100mm topcor macro unless you mean the 135mm. There is no literature I can find that references it. The Topcor macro lenses that I know about about are 30mm, 58mm and 135mm. I only own the 58mm macro and indeed it is a very good lens. |

As for the 58mm macro, I'd skip it as there is the 100mm macro with matching variable extension tube, that one has a legendary reputation, but is rare as rocking horse droppings to see it for sale. The variable tubes are a little less rare but still command a high price.
If you want a 50-ish macro lens, get a 3.5/55 or 2.8/55 Micro-Nikkor, a lot cheaper and incredibly sharp. |

There is no Topcor 100mm macro to my knowledge.
There is a 30mm macro box kit @ $600, the lens alone seems to be half that.
These below are about $300 each and the black RE is more still.
5.8cm f3.5 and 13.5cm f4 bellows lenses, they require a bellows or the helicoid tube, or ext tubes to work.
Then the RE Macro Auto 58/3.5.
There is also 2 pairs of closeup lenses(Diopter lenses)(2 sizes) https://www.butkus.org/chinon/beseler/topcon_ic-1/topcon_ic-1.htm
There is the UV 100/4, but that's a different mount and not a "Macro" lens. I don't think there is a Helicoid tube for UV, just the Topcon/Exakta mount.

https://www.flickriver.com/search/Topcon+UV+100mm/
IMO at best it's as good as the 58 & 135 Macro's. _________________ A Manual Focus Junky...

So the 100mm macro in demoted from legendary to legend or maybe myth, at worst, typo! _________________ Dedicated to using manual focus lenses with digital. Ian has an interesting history of producing less-than-accurate posts here on this forum.
While clearly referring to a Topcor RE when writing about the 58mm Macro lens, obviously he was confusing Topcor with Hexanon (in a previous posting he'd been comparing Topcors and Hexanons).
There is no Topcor RE 100mm macro with with matching variable extension tube.
There is, however, such a Hexanon, and i do own it - albeit not with the (rare) extension tube, but with the corresponding (high quality) Konica bellows.
I hope it's clear now!

Here is the original bayonet hood. Its diameter should be a bit over 62mm. You can try to guesstimate its height. |

I got my first Topcon lens on Sunday. A UV Topcor 48mm f/2 attached to a winkEmirror camera.
A nice clean looking combination, but unfortunately the leaf shutter is stuck - it seems these are a real pain to service correctly, but flood cleaning might well do the job (still quite a big job) but the camera only cost £6.75 and I'm sure I'll enjoy the challenge. |

Thanks for the link, I've found 62mm metal hoods no brand, which I suppose could do the job, but they are so many different heights. I can assume the height could be around 2 cm, but would be nice if somebody could confirm that, as if I'm buying a bigger one, ain't to easy to cut it nice. |

I believe the filter thread is 62mm, but I don't have a 62mm filter to test. _________________ A Manual Focus Junky...

The genuine hood projects about 15mm beyond the front filter ring. It is 70mm in diameter. If the hood you're going to use is smaller at the end, it may need to be shorter. |

Thanks you, I was about to get a 25mm long one in metal, but finally I should look for a plastic one, as it would be easier to shorten, I suppose, besides , the interior of the 62mm thread hood I suspect would not reach the 70mm in diameter, so finally , the length would be less than 15mm. We'll see. I appreciate your answer anyway. |
