While I've been building my collection of mf lenses I've always known that 300mm would be my longest lens. I didn't know which 300mm to get until I did a lot of reading online last week.
This is the shiny rocket launcher I ended up with. Cool

#1

#2

#3

#4

It's in beautiful condition, inside and out, and everything works as it should.
As I'm quite keen on shooting birds, I took it for a test run down on the beach;

#1 (wide open)

I'm pleased with the IQ but metering seems to be an issue, under-exposure is prevalent so I have to adjust accordingly.
Oh well, you can't have everything. Rolling Eyes Very Happy

It looks fantastically industrial, like an old school rocket launcher!

And what a great BIF!!!

This would probably be my choice for a longer tele but I am not sure if I would use it at all due to weight and heavy duty tripod requirements though, and weight is also the reason I cannot purchase it thru eBay, huge shipping costs!

Nice result!

It weighs five and a half pounds with my 7D attached. (note: you attach the camera to the lens, not the other way)
I shot that bird hand-held, it's not quite as bad as it sounds to hold, but I wouldn't want to do it for very long. Wink
Mine came from within the UK so postage was £10, quite good considering.
I'm mostly surprised by it's gorgeous glossy finish, I didn't expect that! It really looks beautiful on the camera and I'm sure it'll turn a few heads. (mostly folk who think I'm a terrorist with a rocket launcher lmao)

I specially love the white version but I think being rare it fetches higher prices.

Anyhow, this is an impossible lens to ship from foreign countries, I would pay like 25% of the item price...

No, I haven't got that set-up, my lens is very different and wouldn't fit the 'gun' cradle. Sad
I did look at those but I couldn't find one that I thought was clean. Plus these days it wouldn't be wise to walk around with that arrangement, I'd have armed police in my face in no time. Laughing

Yeah, I read that those are fetching higher prices but I don't understand why. I'm not sure about that focusing mechanism either, anyone here use one?
Shame about the postage CA, maybe you'll find one closer to home someday. Smile

I have the same lens, (Tair 3C, 4.5/300), with the Photosniper kit. Mine is Black though. Nice and sharp, and I do prefer it to my Pentacon 300/4 (It's nowhere near as heavy, but the Bokeh is not as nice as the Pentacon's).

I use the Gun mount with my 400D (I added an electronic release inside the trigger), and I get some nice results.

Don't worry about people thinking it's a Gun, most people are just curious about it, and will ask (I've used mine in the Town centre). If you do get annoyed by a particularly officious officer, they're great for winding them up when their colleagues/backup arrive, laugh at them, and laugh even harder when You point it at said officer, and go "Click, BANG!". True Story (Aforementioned Town centre... even a little old man was telling him to "go to bloody specsavers, you f***ing idiot")

Laughing Laughing wish I'd been there too.I saw a video on youtube showing someone who had fixed up an electronic shutter release, looked pretty good. Maybe I should have waited for a clean sniper kit, but when I saw this one I just knew it was as close to excellent condition as I was likely to find so I jumped on it.
Very Happy

Thanks. Let's see how I fair when I visit the falconry show next week, it lasts 30 minutes but I'm not sure if my left arm will. Sad

I bought my 300A a long time ago with a bunch of Zenit stuff from a crummy 'antique' shop for £40, it's a lens I will never part with. I don't use it a lot, but I have a huge respect for it. I does exactly what it should do, deliver a sharp image.
It's not an easy lens, but it deserves its 'legendary' status. Cool

From my own experience I will risk to clime that Tair-3 A is the best one among others. I mean the mechanical convenience, and the optical quality. Of course, I own that baby (I mean A version), and is very happy with it.

In addition, it might be very easy adapted for a lot of other systems, especially for Nikon.

That's a beauty, I have used Tair (photosnipers converted) for few years now and love the quality they are capable of. Great for video's too Very Happy

Thanks again guys Very Happy

@Pascal, the real test is when I take the lens to the castle today for a falconry show, I can't wait to see how I get on. Razz

congrats... I have a much older version (brussels grand prix) and like many others i keep it as my 300mm prime having sold my Nikon and Tamron 300s.. It is a stupendously sharp lens with zero CA.

I have never tried it handheld as I also have the excellent Olympus Zuiko 70-300mm zoom lens which fits the bill for handheld shots.

Can't wait to see how it turns out at the falconry event (I have enjoyed your previous raptor shots very much).

How does the shutter release on the sniper version work? I toyed with the idea of getting the photosniper, but can it be adapted either to NEX-5 or E-PL1?
