I just won a Sun 60-135 zoom off of Ebay. It was listed as is or for parts.
I decided to take the gamble. The pictures show it wide open and stopped down.

So I hope I got a good one. The pictures look very promising. I can't find much info on this lens, so any help would be most welcome.

I did find this thread.
http://forum.mflenses.com/any-info-on-sun-lenses-t15814,highlight,sun+zoom.html

Here is a couple of pics of the won I just one. I'm guessing mine is newer?

Seems ok!

I love how these lenses look, I'm still not sure if the newer sun lenses are from the same company or not, they are a lot more conservative looking.

It's a bit hard to trace the company info.

I have some 80's looking lenses that are called sun and the logo on the lens cap seems flamboyant enough to be the same company bit the actual lenses are a but more conservative.

According to camerapedia they changed from sun optical to goto sun in the 80's so maybe that's when they became more normal looking.

There is still a sun optical company going now, but the site says they were founded in 1987, maybe they are a different company and are responsible for those sun actinon lenses you see on ebay.

Anyway, that's getting a bit off topic.

These older ones were very attractive to look at.

I have this 35mm, the fact that it's quite good optically is meaningless, it's great as an ornament

Thank you.
I could easily make a collection of Sun lenses. I like them all. Pretty cool
that you have the Sun hood with yours.

I hope that mine is Sun built. I cleaned up one of the pics and you can see the Sun Optical name on it.

I have some Sun zooms. They are all metal all black. Some test shots showed they are reasonably good. Work is piling up here; for photos will need to wait. On my shortlist of lenses to photograph for mflenses...Smile

edit: pictures here

I have one -

Not bad at all.

I also have an 80-240mm in the cosmetic style as the lens in the op but all black, I think luis has it too or used to have it? edit: It's the larger lens pictured in the post luis linked to!

I also have a newer 28mm F/2.5 and 28-80mm and the lens caps have the same logo as in this advert:

http://www.justmystage.com/home/harrier/contents/Photo_fm2/GotoSun1981LRG.jpg

The original scanner of this advert has named it gotosun and camerapedia claims sun optical changed to goto sun shortly before it's demise so it seems they are all from the same company but it's a little flakey.

What I really want is one of the older range finder lenses, they look very pretty and should adapt to my G1 easily enough.

The 28mm and zoom are both quite average in terms of sharpness but give excellent colour.

I do still have the 80-240, a very fine lens (by my standards anyway), but extremely heavy.

PostPosted: Fri Jul 02, 2010 1:13 am    Post subject: Reply with quote

Yes! it must be the heaviest lens I own relative to it's size, fantastic quality but maybe a bit overkill on the build quality!

luis do you still have the sun advert scans you mention in the 60-135mm thread?

I have this lens in exactly the same version as in this thread http://forum.mflenses.com/sun-zoom-t10913.html and the thread you've mentioned . It is in fixed M42 mount with oddly placed A/M switch. It has 6 or 8 aperture blades, don't remember exactly but definitely not 5 as yours.

It is very heavy lens, I didn't test it enough but from several shots I did I found it very decent. I completely agree with the conclusion in this thread http://forum.mflenses.com/sun-60-135-3-5-zoom-1970s-bling-t10930,highlight,sun+60135.html. I found it reasonably sharp and contrasty, having not bad bokeh and even producing 3D effect.

Its only drawback apart from the weight is that it is varyfocus zoom, meaning that focus changes while zooming.

.

1- Sun lenses were made by goyo optical
http://www.goyooptical.com/
(you can see how friendly looks the boss
http://www.goyooptical.com/message.html )

2- The lenses on the ad are most well known under soligor c/d "Dual Focal" name
it was dual focal lenses (not zoom / not varifocal / just DUAL focal)
quality not bad / not good (at the same level that an average zoom - far below a good zoom

3- Sun had 4x differents looks
a-Full black with metal ring - (mostly t2 mount /also sold under soligor name)
b-the chrome + black finish / mostly ys mount
c-the full black with rubbered rings (mixed fiwed mounts and ys mount
http://forum.mflenses.com/three-suns-sun-opt-zoom-set-t29966.html
d-the modern look as can be seen on this ad
http://www.justmystage.com/home/harrier/contents/Photo_fm2/GotoSun1981LRG.jpg
Look how distintive is the lock button on the right lens
MOST 1985 SOligor lenses are sun made (28-80 // 35-140 // 85-310....)

Please don't take this as me challenging you but how do you know goyo optical is the same company?

According to the website goyo was formed in 1976 and when I search for goyo + sun optical I get very few results and several of them are posts by yourself on this forum!

Just curious how you found out...

Coincidently Goyo are the makers of the f/0.95 lens that is being marketed under the Noktor brand that came out for micro 4/3 mount cameras

It is what was written on an extensive 1985 lens survey (200 optics tested)

I received the 60-135 today and it's in mint condition and works perfectly. The leather case is really nice to.

It has the right YS adapter (m42) for my Yashica Electro X, so I will test it this week and post some pictures.
The lens is all metal including the sliding hood, execpt for the rubber focusing grips. The lens weighs in at 660 grams.
I'm pretty excited about this one. Very Happy

This is the first picture I've taken with this lens on Digital. Sun YS 60 mounted on my Canon EOs 10D.
This picture is heavily cropped because the Daylilly is in my holding bed.
The weather has been to hot and no rain at all. So I'm way behind on my gardening.
Shot Wide open at f3.5 at 60mm focal length setting. No PP. Please, comments are welcome. Be Honest. Smile

Hard to tell from the small pic size but it doesn't look that sharp to me, but I do like the overall rendering, colours are nicely saturated. Not sure about the bokeh, looks a bit busy but would need more examples to judge.

Funny, I have a "sun opt. Sun ZOOM YS-85 F:4.5 85-210 mm" in that style. It has pushin/out inbuilt silver hood, and a YS-PE (= M42) contraption attached that will prove useful if I see a YS 400/3.3 or something. Came with a M42 to C adaptor, leather cylinder, and a 300/4.5 :>

It is heavy but feels plasticky. AFAIR it didn't win sharpness prizes, but I have not used it much.

SUN zooms are great in contrast and colors. But not so in resolution power.

I really like them

The Sun looks like my Spiratone by Mitake: http://forum.mflenses.com/spiratone-12-5-f24mm-and-12-8-f24mm-t32788,highlight,%2Bspiratone.html

the Soligor is a different lens...
