There is a fairly strong body of evidence to suggest that many of the PK mount lenses bearing the Sears name were actually made by Ricoh and are Rikenons in disguise.
I am puzzled about the M42 varieties though.
Here is a 2.8/28 bearing the Sears label.
Is it also an earlier Rikenon or is there some other maker represented here.
Your thoughts, as always, are valued.

That is a Rikenon, here it is in Ricoh guise:

Early Ricoh lenses were mostly Tokinas.
Sears got the whole series from Ricoh along with the TLS bodies.
This lens is one of them. Early Tokina auto same as the T4 version.

How does it handle? When I first got into buying old lenses, the M42 Auto Rikenons were at the top of my list. Grab the 1.7/50 if you can a very nice lens, good colours.

I've always thought these are Tomioka. My problem with Rikenon origin is that you can find the same lens branded as Mamiya/Sekor.

If you want a 28mm in M42, the best one imho is the Mamiya/Sekor SX 2.8/28, it has 8 elements. Second best is probably the Takumar 3.5/28. The later, smaller Tokina RMC 2.8.28 is a good lens so this early Tokina should be at least okay.

there are two problems using mamiya/sekor SX lenses with adapters. First is they don't have an auto/manual aperture switch, second is they have a funky flange on the lens mount that interferes with some adapters

Most of the early Mamiya Sekor M42 SLR lenses are also the first generation auto Tokinas.
Literally identical to the equivalent Soligor, Vivitar, Rikenon, etc., under the skin. Several other camera makers relabelled these too, Petri, Yashica, and sometimes Miranda, and probably others I'm not recalling at the moment.
And one Mamiya at least, the 400/6.3, is a preset Tokina.
Not all of the Mamiya lenses of course - the 50-55mms and the famous 60mm macro aren't.

Oddly enough I have a Sears-Sekor 28/2.8 with the Mamiya SX pin, and also lacks the M/A switch that other feature of the SX lenses, that doesn't have the annoying flange.
Is it one of the fancy 8-element jobs?
I guess I would have to do surgery to find out.

Do you have this one coming OH or is it just on your wish list? Want to see some shots. I got my first Rikenon lens recently. I love these old lenses with Sears, Jc Penney and Montgomery Ward branding. Are there Sears stores down under?

It is on the way - should be here in a week or two.
Nope - no Sears down heresaway.
This one is coming from Elko, Minnesota
Interestingly, I also am a woodworker and I have a block plane made by Stanley but bearing the Montgomery Ward label - "Wards Master"
A very fine plane.
Very Happy

Gratias.
The considered opinion is that this is a Rikenon.
Not important, but helps with the ancestry - it is nice to know where all our little ones come from Smile
Definitely a keeper - I must see how it handles landscapes. If it turns out as good as my son's old Tamron (Tokina) I'll be happy

Rikenon I think - not Mamiya.
A couple wide open with "didn't quite nail the focus" Embarassed
Of course there is distortion so don't use a 28mm this close for portraits - but a bit of fun anyway.

So appraised MAMIYA Sekor Auto M42 is also the same Tokina lens. Please check photos on this link: http://aflenses.ru/id/31776

Funny though 24mm M42 Rikenon is SIGMA made.
