I want to be able to control the shutter of my Sony Nex-5N without having to touch the camera. Let's say I have my 600mm lens set up on a tripod pre-focussed on a birds nest. I want to use my binoculars to see better and choose the right moment.

What options do I have?

The NEX uses a wireless remote, similar to a TV remote, called the Remote Commander (part no RMT-DSLR1). It uses the IR window on the front of the camera - obviously the remote has to be visible to the camera, so releasing from the rear is not possible. It only works in certain modes, check the manual. I'm not sure about the maximum range but I've used mine at about 15m.

(Sony is currently out of stock in UK. I got mine on Ebay for £28 )

Oh, I think I have this one for my Sony a900. It is however disappointing that you have to stand in front of your camera...

NEX remotes have the same protocol as the Sony Alpha remotes.
You could also get a simple Sony Alpha remote (shutter release only) which works very perfectly for NEX for less about 3€ incl. shipment on Ebay from China

Because I wanted some more feature for timelapse movies and deep sky stacking on NEX I build this little tool:

You can trigger your NEX camera from BEHIND it, or from the handle of your tripod with this:
