Question for Attila about Nikon

Attila,
I've been getting more and more morose about selling the D50. Aside
from the infinity focus issue, did your M42 lenses perform as well on
your Nikon as the the Olympus E1? If I stick with AI, AI'd, and AIS
lenses, Adaptall-2 Tamrons with Nikon mounts, and use the Russian
and Japanese M42s for close-focused subjects, I think I'd be happier.
Really miss the electronic rangefinder (blinking green light that stays
on when in focus) as it was a real boon in focusing.

Would love to hear your thoughts on this. I'm either going this way,
or look for a Canon 20D, where I can get chipped adapters for focus
confirmation.

Bill

Bill, I think that amongst us, you are one of the "less collectors and more photographers", so to say - my advice then is to go for the simplest setup. If you are happy with your current camera and the Nikon lenses, why change?

Never change from something that makes you happy.

If you instead were the kind that likes to experiment with every old lenses that he finds here or there, I would advice for a Canon camera, because it would be really a waste to buy beautiful Russian glass to use it only for macro work.

In my experience Olympus E-1 is more sensitive for lens quality than Nikon D50. If a lens is superb performer on Olympus E-1 that lens perform very well everywhere. Many of my lenses was better performer on D50 than on my Olympus-E1. I really loved that camera reason only why I sold I couldn't make infinity shoots with wide angle lenses and I couldn't mount others just Nikkors and M42. Canon has a huge benefits you can mount almost every kind of lenses as you know. Last word is every lens perform better on Nikon D50 or equal than Olympus E-1.

Orio, you are right, I'm more into taking pictures than collecting. I am
after end-results regardless of what is hanging off the front of the
camera! I really wish there were chipped adapters for Olympus.

Attila, yes, I liked the handling of the D50 which I found to be a better
camera than the D70 I owned before it (unless you have to have
Commander Mode for your flashes) and has a brighter viewfinder, too.
The D50 had almost immediate startup and was a very responsive
camera.

All this being said, I still am drawn to the Canon's CMOS sensor like
a moth the flame, there's nothing else quite like it, for smoothness and
color rendition.

I guess I will stick with what I have, with all those adapters I've now
bought for it, but if a Canon 20D runs cheap enough on ebay, I'll be
bidding on it, have lots of BP-511 batteries and I still kept a Nikon>
Canon adapter. And both my Olympus and the Canon 20D take
CF flash cards, I hate those flimsy SD cards!

Thanks for your comments, fellas.

Bill
