Nikkor lenses for me

Well, I consider(ed) myself a die hard Canon user.

But in this forum, Nikkor lenses are highly regarded. So I bit the bullet (and swallowed my pride) and bought a Nikon => EOS adapter Sad

I bought the one that suits Nikon F and Ai mount, like this one:

Click here to see on Ebay

Now, the problem is, what lens to buy????
Is F mount also include AF? If so, does AF lens have manual aperture ring?
There are Ai ans Ai-s type mounts. What's difference?

I am also planning to buy Canon lens caps for the Nikkors Laughing

cheers
Ed

Nikkor lenses has same mount you can use any of them with your adapter. I not suggest to take AF lenses just manual lenses. Many AF lenses has closed aperture blades as default position blades are open only on right body and picture quality is worst than MF lenses.

Let's talk about MF lenses:

AI,AIS,NoN-AI , pre-AI, Series E, doesn't matter for you all will works fine on your camera body with your adapter.

You can't go wrong with any Nikkor lenses.

Let we know what focal lengts do you need and we will suggest to you the best ones.

Thanks heaps Attila. Very Happy

I am after 105/2.5 (watching it now!) and also a wide angle or two.
Any suggestion for a WA lens?

Thanks
Cheers
Ed

You can find many samples on above link.

Let me know which focal lenght and what is your budget.

My personal preference:

Nikkor 20mm UD f3.5 pre-AI
Nikkor 24mm f2.8 AIS
Nikkor 35mm f1.4 AI,AIS

I not recommend only Nikkor 28mm f3.5

I have Nikkor 105mm P.C f2.5 pre-AI (multi-coated) and Nikkor 105mm f2.5 AIS both are superb lens your choice was excelent.

I am now also watching Nikkor 24mm f2.8 Very Happy Thanks.

How about Micro Nikkor 55mm f2.8?

Seems quite cheap.

cheers

I used personally Nikkor 55mm f3.5 wonderful sharp lens look in the gallery and it has MACRO 1:1! 55mm f2.8 I suppose same good but it has Macro 1:2 only.

In genrally AIS lenses the latest and the best ones, but not always. In many cases previous version are same good.

Only the "G" lenses which are those without an aperture ring.

This photo was taken with an AF Nikkor 1.4/50 with an aperture ring adapted to my EOS 350D:

@esrods:

I also am a thrilled Canon user (350D) but I love to use old Nikkors at my cam (I prefer the per-AI models due to aesthetical reasons and the special "feel" these lenses have).

Meanwhile this is my Nikkor collection*:

- Nikkor-N.C 2.8/24
- Nikkor-O 2.0/35
- Nikkor-H 2.0/50
- Nikkor-S.C 1.2/55
- Nikkor-Q.C 3.5/135 (AI'd)

I love each of these lenses and I also have some third party F-mount zoom lenses (most with AI(S) functionality):
- Tokina SZ-X 4-5.3/28-105 SD
- Soligor C/D Zoom+Macro 3.8-5.3/35-200 MC
- Tamron SP 3.8-5.4/60-300 MC 23A
- Tamron SP 3.5/70-210 CF Macro MC 19AH
- Tamron 3.8-4/70-210 Macro 46A
- Soligor MC 3.5/70-220 Macro

and my Soligor C/D Zoom+Macro 3.8-4.8/75-205 MC I have exchanged with Attila.

These lenses also are very good to exceptional.

So you see, I have not experienced a disappointment with F-mount lenses so far.

* Adding a Nikkor 2.5/105 would be nice. I almost got one yesterday...

There are a host of great nikkors in AI and AIS especially. the 50/2 and 85/2 are relatively cheap, but wonderful glass (especially the 85/2). Your choice of the 105/2.5 is classic - arguably the best lens nikon ever made for general use. The 135/2.8 is under-rated in my view and fairly cheap. I also love the 20/4, but they are rare and can be expensive. The 35/1.4 is fab, but pricey, as is the 28/2.8 (close focus version).

Dont hesitate to em me if you have any questions - I have a few nikkors in AI and AIS format.

I was eBay sniping today and the first victom was Micro Nikkor 55mm f2.8. Cool

US$110 was the shot price.

Not cheap Crying or Very sad compare to Russian lenses.

Missed shot on 24mm f2.8.

Will post some pics.

I have many Nikkors (and more used to have in the past), but if I have to say only ONE lens, then I'd say: NIKKOR-H 1.8/85.

The 24/2.8 has been increasing in price recently for some reason - I imagine some guru on dpreview or similar has blessed it and so everyone is out to get it. Similar happened to 105/2.5 a year or so ago. Might be worth waiting and zero in on an alternative.

Today I made test shoots with an Nikkor 28mm f2.8 AIS close focus version (20cm) 24mm lens good as this one, so don't be surprised prices are increased.

Took the 24/2 AI out for a spin today. This is at 2.8 (too bright to open fully):

This is as close as I could get to a shawl:

I can tell you two very good reasons:

1. It is a great performer with a very pleasant character and
2. The focal length is perfect for a crop-DSLR (eff. 38.4mm)

I love my copy. (Thanks again, Orio!)

NEED A WIDE LENS OR TWO OR THREE OR FOUR .... !!!!

@Patrickh, nice copy you've got there. Let me know if you want to part with that lens Wink

Hi all,

I came across this lens - Nikkor-P f2.5/105mm. It's P type ????

Does this fit to my Nikon to EOS adapter?

If it does, is this good lens?

cheers
Ed

PostPosted: Wed Oct 17, 2007 11:43 am    Post subject: Reply with quote

Ed, "P" only states the number of lenses that are used for the optical design, "p" means 5.

This lens is a very good lens. It should fit to a Nikkor-EOS-adapter, but sometimes it depends on the adapter. Some old lenses are a little loose and fit only wiggly in some adapters which is not nice.

I hope we do not watch the same lens on ebay! (Foto Schneider, Austria)
That would be bad. Sad

Thank you, LucisPictor.

Don't you worry. I won't snipe your prey Wink

My prey is hiding on the other side of the World.

So "Australia" instead of "Austria". Wink

I'll see, if I get the lens. As soon as it gets too expensive, I will let it go...

Don't blame me.... but does it worth having 2.8 wide lens on cropped DSLR when you can have a brand new 17-50 2.8 AF Tamron zoom for 300€ or less ?
