Posted: Tue May 29, 2012 10:53 am Post subject: Measure Radioactive Lenses using your Phone! |
|
|
There is this App called "Radioactivity Counter" available for purchase for the iPhone or Android.
This is a part of the app description:
"REAL Radioactivity counter based on a camera sensor, no extra hardware required
Radioactivity Counter
This is a real working radioactivity counter. You only need a BLACK TAPE to cover the lenses !! "
it costs about 4.5$ so i gave it a try... and... it works!
I tested all my "suspicious lenses" using this app! and only my, well known to be radioactive, 50mm 1.4 takumar went off and measured about x40 times more radiation then the ambient.
other lenses (jupiter 9, and a few others) did measure to be just a little more active then the ambient about x2 or x3 times the ambient.
so I just wanna let you know there is a cheap way to know for sure if a lens is radioactive and how much radioactive is it. ofc its not limited to lenses and you can check all kinds of materials with this.
you can read how this app works, they have videos with tests, and i also confirm it is legit.
it gave me good consistent measurements every single time, and it reacted very good when testing the 50 1.4 takumar time after time.
so just a heads up here, and if you get the app please share some knowledge of your findings
this is a link for the play store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rdklein.radioactivity |

Are CMOS senzors sensitive to radiation? (And which spectrum?)
Or is this an April fools joke? |

In astroimaging, when taking long subexposures (10 minutes, for example), background radiation can cause random "hits" in the images. I assume this app looks for those hits and counts them up.
There are videos on YouTube where people expose a video camera sensor to a radioactive object, and make videos of the bright flashes from the sensor. In some (rare?) cases, you can get dead or stuck pixels after doing this. This may happen more when you expose a bare sensor to strong alpha radiation, rather the than gamma radiation that this app picks up. _________________

I don't know why people are so worried about lenses with some long half life radioactivity, it's not like you're going to lose your hair, get cancer, and die, if there was, the camera company's would all have been sued out of existence. _________________ My lens list |

It doesn't mean that people looking for radioactive stuff are just worried.
It might be that they just want to know a bit more about their lenses, as much as i want to know who manufactured it and what's its formula.

ok first off ill start by stating that "ghosts" are something that doesnt live in My imagination.
second Electromagnetic radiation, such as induction in powel lines, or wifi, or cell phones, or even radio, is not Ionizing radiation = what is called radioactive type. so you wont have any indication that a material is radioactive but measuring its electromagnetic emissions. having said that, maybe that app is good for detecting metal in your wall (but after i have seen how that work via you cell phone, i wouldnt count on it.) _________________ Canon 60D and a bunch of MF glass! |

sorry for double posting,
yeah i think its measures cant be very accurate if compared to a geiger counter, so you cant tell EXACTLY how much radiation your body will receive from the measured item. but on the other hand its a 100% test if an item is radioactive or not. so in that regard it is very useful _________________ Canon 60D and a bunch of MF glass! |

Awesome, I have an metal detector app as well.
You shouldn't worry about radioactive lenses, but I heard some radioactive eye pieces could be dangerous because it's so close to the eye and the surface of the eyes aren't nearly as good protected as human skin _________________ "If you only shoot manual, why didn't you buy a manual lens from the start?!?" | Lens collection | Manuellfokus.no |

Well, 10 milliSv/hr that tanheis measured does not strike me as totally trivial dose. This is about 30 times higher than average background radiation on Earth. The rate on an air flight is 1 to 10 millSv/hr. One thing that makes this less scary is the fact that radiation falls off as squared distance from the source and he measured 10millSV/hr fairly close to the rear element. Still, I'm fairly concerned about carrying thorium lenses in my pockets. _________________ Many lenses and some film bodies for sale here: http://forum.mflenses.com/canon-fd-minolta-md-c-mounts-m42-pentax-and-more-t50465.html |
