I seem to recall it was one of the brands under which the excellent Tomioka 55/1.4 was sold (little brother of the legendary 1.2). Tomiokas were sold under so many labels its hard to keep track.
I have the Sears-brand version that was sold with Ricoh-made cameras.
A picture would help identify it. _________________ I like Pentax DSLR's, Exaktas, M42 bodies of all kinds, strange and cheap Japanese lenses, and am dabbling in medium format/Speed Graphic work. |

Yes, it's Tomioka. The results should be close or identical to Revuenon 55/1.4:

I don't know if my Cosinon 28 2.8 is the same made, but to me is not a nice lens. Maybe it was not made by Tomioka, as this one is.

Tomioka seems to have made only a limited range of lenses for its customers, mainly high quality "normal" and macro. The Tomioka clients like Yashica and Ricoh (and presumably Cosina) went elsewhere for their wide angles and tele range. A lot of them got the rest of the range from Tokina for instance. _________________ I like Pentax DSLR's, Exaktas, M42 bodies of all kinds, strange and cheap Japanese lenses, and am dabbling in medium format/Speed Graphic work. |

I have Cosinon 35/2.8 and it's not very impressive to. Quite good wide opened (similar central sharpness to SC Curtagon 35/2.8 or CZJ Flektogon 35/2.4), but corners are very poor and CA simply horrible.
Almost all M42 55/1.4 non-MC lenses are made by Tomioka (Tominon, Chinon, Yashinon, Sears, Sekor (not the SX one), Revuenon, Ricoh...). It's a pity, that Tomioka doesn't have MC version of this lens (Yashinon DS-M 50/1.4 is differend design, it uses thorium glass and it's CA is much stronger) _________________ (almost) complete list of Helios lenses |

Tomioka/Yashica did not make longer lenses, they were mostly made by Tokina
from the description of a YASHICA collector, though Tomioka made good wide
angle lenses such as 21/3.3 (for Europe only), 21/3.5 (later ML version, Chinon name too)
and 24/2.8, 28/2.8 and 35/2.8. |
