Took a quick shot this morning on the way to work at Bainbridge Island for a
veterinarian friend. I love working with the dogs, and it's physical work
instead of mental work, so it's good for me.

I saw a nice tulip coming up along a sidewalk, so I took a shot with the
X100. I had been fooling around with settings (still trying to learn everything)
and it looks like I set up in-camera sharpening WAY too high! But, not bad
for a very quick shot with the camera set to macro mode. It was just at sunrise, so the light was dim. Had to go with ISO3200.

Great colours, Larry. Almost like a painting.

Thanks you guys! For a very quick shot, I like it too. The striations on the
petals DO look like brush strokes. Shocked

I think we have an exciting future to look forward to in terms of our expectations of high ISO performance from digital systems Very Happy

Really, I think this camera's high ISO performance is as good as the D3 now! Now I wish, they make a new version interchangeable mount! Wink

Thanks all. You know, I have several ISO 6400 images in the camera. I'll
pull them out as soon as I can. There are a few ISO 12800 images
as well. On the LCD screen (which certainly isn't much of a viewer
compared to a monitor), the ISO 6400 looks pretty clean.

Regarding interchangeable mount: that would be wonderful; however, I
haven't really missed using other mounted lenses on this camera. So far,
I've been able to zoom with my feet, as they say, whether it be a macro
shot like this, or a landscape. I realize that if I was say....at the edge of
a cliff, a telephoto just might be the safer way to go. Laughing With all this
"foot zooming" I haven't been able to see any "pattern" that these are all
at the same focal length of 35mm (equivalent).

One thing I HAVE noticed is that depth of field is shockingly nice at f:3.5
down to wide open f:2. It's really nice to be able to de-focus the background
when I want to. I didn't expect it to be as good as it is. Shocked

Impressive shot, Larry!. And the results at so high ISO are outstanding...

Keep us excited with more great samples as this one Wink
Thanks for sharing,

Jes.

I only have a proprietary Microsoft Picture Viewer on this company
computer, but it does allow me to crop.

Here is a very nice little dog named Pearl. She loves to roll over on
her back and have her stomach scratched. Laughing

Just a quick shot. It was very dim in the room, with no
lights on, so I let the camera pick out the ISO 5000 automatically,
based on 1/350th shutter speed if I remember correctly.

I made the focus point very small and pointed it over her eye. I wish
this could be done without going to the menu; however, it CAN be put
into the Fn button. Then you just hit the function button and use the
rocker to move the focus point around. There is also face recognition
that could be put into the Fn button.

The focus frame lights up automatically when it is low light like this.

I think that ISO 5000 looks just fine, even with no post-processing. I
am not much of a pixel-peeper, but I can't see any "blobs" or anything.
Perhaps those of you who know much more about ISO might see some
"blobs" or artifacts. Anyway, it looks good enough to me. Confused

Even losing a bit of sharpness (compared to the first one) it's really useable at such high ISO!. The results are great, no funny green squares on the dark areas, etc.
Have you tried to convert it to B&W?. For the highest ISOs, converting to B&W uses to give better results...

If you don't mind, this would be my B&W interpretation of your nice picture: (I'd remove it if you don't like this)

I've just converted it to B&W with LR 3.3 and added a little of sharpening mask. To me the output of this camera is superb, it's time to think about getting one Wink.

Thanks for sharing, Larry!.

Regards.
Jes.

What a BEAUTIFUL black and white conversion! It really POPS! And
the bit of sharpening really brought it ALIVE! Nice job, and you can
do ANYTHING you want to my images, that is how I learn to see
what can be done. Cool

Looking again...and this is SUCH a fine black and white image.
The contrast is outstanding, and the highlights around the edges
of the ears really are what makes the image so real! I'm amazed
at your rendition with LR3. Probably among the best b&w conversions
I've ever seen, with the mid-tones blending beautifully. Shocked
You have made this into a stunning portrait that should be framed.

Larry, you're very kind, but you overwhelm me Smile

I was only trying to showhow high ISO shots can improve with some B&W conversion. I'm really sure this conversion can be done much better.

But if you like it, I'm happy Wink

Regards and thanks again for sharing.

Looks mighty impressive, but DXO marks seems to indicate that ISO 800 on GH2 corresponds more to around ISO 1200 on X100 in terms of sensitivity. That will still give over 1.5 stop advantage over GH2 based on default jpg's comparison. Shocked

Anyone can explain why the curve for X100 seem to level off after ISO 1600? Confused

This seems to be a really nice camera and you are doing very well with it. Having seen a lot of your pictures I'm sure you can get the most out of about any camera.

Alright, found the explanation here:

http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/Our-publications/DxOMark-reviews/Fujifilm-X100-DxOMark-Review/The-ISO-Sensitivity-Graph-Explained

So the maximum RAW iso is 1000 (1600 by Fuji), beyond that is digital rather than analog amplification. Sounds interesting.

Does that mean there is no change in shutter speed under the same lighting condition when you increase ISO beyond 1600 in A mode?

Since I have the camera in hand, I'll try to determine if a shutter speed
change is needed beyond ISO 1600 (in Auto mode).

Also, this evening I will wait for some lowered light values, set the camera
on a tripod with all systems to Auto (including turning off
in-camera processing for noise), and take the relatively same image
at 800, 1600, 3200, 6400, and 12,800. Perhaps that will give us a
better "feel" for the high ISO performance. I really don't care
from ISO 100 to ISO 400, as it is very difficult (for me) to see
any differences.

I'll try to do it "right", as I have made several mistakes throughout
these postings. I know that 2 times I had in-camera processing "on"
because I hadn't looked at the menu with care. Embarassed

About the noise war comments to the topic: Great to see that in the year 2011 other camera manufacturers come within 2 f-stops when it comes to high ISO performance, it's anyway already 3.5 years since the first D3 shipped from Sendai Twisted Evil
