Hi everyone, I am pretty new to the site and would welcome any information on an Elicar V-HQ MC 28mm f2 lens that I have just acquired in an FD fitting. I think it's derived from the Vivitar 28mm f2, the serial no. starts 83 so any info on which factory produced it wld be welcome and any info relating to performance also. Picked it up very cheaply and waiting for delivery so not had a chance to test it yet, cheers Carl.[/b] |

I saw this lens a couple of days ago on ebay and it definately looks exactly like the Komine-made Vivitar Close Focus 28mm that I have. It's a great lens on crop sensors, good sharpness wide open and excellent stopped down and contrast is good too. On fullframe the corners aren't exactly great at any aperture imo. |

It does seem to look much like the Vivitar. It also appears that the 90/2.5 Vivitar Bokina is also rebranded as Elicar. Just last week I found a Vivitar Close Focus 28/2 for a price I could handle. Although I won't have it for a while, I'm hoping it will live up to my expectations. I've been using the f/2.8 version to very good results. _________________ Regards,

I had the Elicar 90/2.5 (V-HQ, I like that bit ) and I tested it against my Series 1 Bokina. There was no difference in performance that I could see, and I did scores of test shots. I wanted to gift one of them to my father, in the end I gave him the Elicar simply because I liked the way the Bokina looked and how it felt in my hand.
I would not be at all surprised if they had the same guts, that Elicar is superb. _________________ Gary

I was familiar with Vivitar f/2.5 versions, but only realized today that Vivitar had f2 lenses made by Kino (Kiron). So I'm questioning that the Elicar is the same as the Komine Close Focus model. _________________ Regards,

There are four third party 2/28s I know:
a. Komine/Vivitar Close Focus : 49mm filter
b. Kiron/Vivitar : 55mm filter
c. Soligor/Tokina? : 58mm filter
http://www.mflenses.com/gallery/v/japenese/Soligor/Soligor_28mm_f2/Soligor_28mm_f2-01.jpg.html
d. Mitake : 62mm filter

It is rather easy to know who make the lens by checking the filter size. The housing of all are different too. _________________ https://lensfever.com/

my Vivitar made by Kiron version, which btw. surprised me with top sharpness even starting from wide open, colors rendered are not my favorites though

Elicar's 90mm is made by Komine and has nothing common with Bokina http://forum.mflenses.com/viewtopic.php?t=51742 |

This is the reason people often mistake the formal name Close Focus with the actual close focus ability on a non-Close Focus lens. You'll see the point being made many times in posts that it has to actually say the word on the front. _________________ Regards,
