I think from a day-to-day usability perspective, the new adapter is the way to go. Now only if the price comes down Wink

Koji, I'll be braving it and will look at taking out the protector on my Contax G 21 Biogon. I guess I should start at the mount end, but the two spring pins on the mount worry me as when I take them off, they will all pop out! It was so much easier taking the protector off my Contax RF 21 Biogon, only 2 set screws. Will post some photos when this happens.

Koji, HELP needed dismantling Contax-G Biogon 21mm.

Took the four obvious screws off.

Screws off.

Carefully took the back plate off, taking extreme care of the two springs that's blocked by the top of the protector.

The back plate, being very careful of the two spring loaded pins.

Took the mounting ring off, the little spacers that the springs go into are also loose.

The removed mounting ring by unscrewing the three screws on the lens mounting ring.

Rear element and protector exposed electrical connector side

Rear element and protector exposed

It seems that the rear element protector is molded into the same ring that provides the electrical contacts to the G1/G2. The connector side did not want to move, but the opposite side was loose. I called it quits at this point. When you removed the electricals when you converted the Sonnar 90 to M42, how did you remove the plastic ring with the electrical contacts? I wanted to be able to return the lens to it's original condition, but it does not look likely now. If I can remove the ring with the connectors and the rear element protector, I can cut off the protector and replace it.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Wilson

G-Sonnar 90mm has a different structure than G-Biogons, which has
almost same rear lens protector and electrical contacts in the same
plastic mold.

You can take it (protector and electric contacts) out, but be warned
you cannot easily put them back without good electric contact.
I have checked M-mounted G-Biogon 21mm shell which was returned
to me when I asked the M-mount conversion of G-Biogon 21mm.

Don't take them out if you want to put them back, the easiest thing you can
do is to cut rear lens protector legs only. Of course it becomes hard to handle
the lens, but it still works with G1 or G2, and also m4/3 cameras. And its
re-sale value is questionable too unfortunately.

For G-Sonnar conversion, I discarded electrical contact part entirely.
I did not need the rear part of the lens as you can see from the conversion
process on my HP.

Koji,

Thanks for the quick response and to confirm that I cannot go any further if I want to put the lens back to it's original state. I'll think about hacking off the protectors with a jeweler's saw. Maybe I'll stick to using the Biogon 21 from my Contax RF instead. Either that, or think about doing a M-mount conversion.

Good News!! Talked to Alex and his supplier may be able to produce the new type of Contax G to m4/3 adapter with the big focusing ring. It may take a few weeks before I can get my hands on a prototype and test it Wink

Hope this won't send the price of G lens skyrocket, I still need to get a 45 before it's too late...

PostPosted: Wed Mar 10, 2010 2:34 am    Post subject: Reply with quote

Better hurry! Get you 45 while you still can, reasonably. It would make a nice portrait lens on m4/3 Smile I'm still toying with taking the rear protector wings off my Biogon 21mm. Worse come to worse, I can do the Leica M-mount conversion.

Now I need to look for both 45 and 90 Sad

We will be fighting for the G90s as I'm looking for another one to adapt to m42 like Koji's Wink Saw one in the shop last week for $240, but on evilBay they range from $130-180 now. I guess with shipping it's still a bit cheaper on evilBay.

Are the lens in HK store more expensive than they are on ebay in general? I haven't been back since 2006 and don't know when I will have time to go back...

In general ... manual lenses are more expensive in HK than in Europe, whereas AF lenses are cheaper in HK on average.
