Contax AX, first shots

First shots with this camera, using the Distagon 2.8/25 and the Sonnar 2.8/85.
The colours are horrible thanks to Ektachrome slides (never more).
In spite of the film, I am happy with the results, the focusing is very precise.
The last shot is a macro taken with the Sonnar 85 and using the special Macro function of the AX (i.e. I did not use tubes or bellows or additional lenses).

1- Distagon 2.8/25:

2- Distagon 2.8/25:

4- Sonnar 2.8/85:

5- Sonnar 2.8/85 with camera in macro mode:

Very nice, Orio, I can see the capabilities, despite the film! Lots of detail
in the big file of #4.

Hi Orio, congrats!
The light metering seems to also work very fine, I've been told that slides are more ligth critical than film...
Thanks for sharing!

Jes.

Yes, metering is perfect, I have 4 Contax cameras and I have yet to find one whose light metering is less than perfect. I wish that Canon EOS' metering was like Contax's!

I wish eos everything was like CONTAX Smile

It looks like you had a really nice "first date" with the AX Wink
I love that macro mode and your sample does it justice as well.
Congrats Orio. I hope you get many years of good service from this little sweetheart Very Happy

I felt in love with the "macro mode" immediately!
It really expands the possibilities of the lenses that you have.
OK you can do the same with the extensions etc... but never as fast and spontaneously as switching a lever on the camera.

Really photographer-oriented stuff and technology. Why aren't all companies like that? Rolling Eyes

I didn't understand the macro mode, and how it was activated.

Just a lever! How NICE!

Yes, the camera moves the film plane all the way backwards. This turns every lens into a macro lens!

It is a good investment for Zeiss lovers, and also every M42 lens can be
Auto-focused. That is a ticket!

AF being aside, this camera is very nice one with a very good finder.
Even manual focus is not bad at all, though AF of this camera is
somehow fun to use.

Congratulations Orio. Long live AX.

What a clever macro solution!

Another great feature of this camera, you can (if you want) control the autofocus from a different button than the shutter. So you can have your pointing finger on the shutter and your thumb on the focusing button. This might seem useless at first thought but it proved to be efficient for me, as you don't have to control pressure of the finger, and mostly, you don't refocus every time you shoot and don't have to perform a "lock focus" action to obtain that.

Very nice... Given how well the "unusual" tech used to turn C/Y (and any other adapted lenses) into full AF lenses with macro mode thrown in actually worked, one wonders why they didn't use this tech as the base of their one and only DSLR instead of creating an all-new lens format. Imagine, the very best of Zeiss, Yashica and Pentax (adapted, or course) in a nice full-frame DSLR. It would be heaven,
