Hi,
is there a decent compact and light old MF lens with a focal length between say 250mm and 300mm, which you can recommend me?
I have the Nikkor 300mm f4.5, which is a good lens, but not exactly light and compact.

Thanks.

Light and compact, sounds like a small mirror lens. Tamron has a good one, the 06B, but that is 350mm. I never had one, i can only judge from others experience.
Minolta has the 250mm f/5.6, very small and light and VERY good, i have one, so i can confirm on the quality!

There are some other good short mirrors, i think they will come up here soon!

Cheers, René.

I have two suggestions...

1. Tamron 300mm f/5.6 CT-300
Decent optical performance, compact and quite light, due to fixed mounts, not Adaptall. BBAR multi-coating, built-in hood. The lightest 300 I have.

2. Vivitar 70-150mm f/3.8 zoom, w/ 2x matched multiplier.
Cheap, compact since it's 2-piece, very good optical performance. It's not exactly light though.
But you will get 140-300mm zoom with a good image.

This series of Chinon with the unusual, and deeply unfashionable, tapered design is actually very good, there's a 300 / 5.6 and 200 / 3.5. Both are light, multi coated, well built and well above average. I sold my 200 and regret it.

Tamron made Soligor 250mm f/4.5 is really nice and my favorite in this focal lenght Wink

Tamron SP 300mm f/5.6 Adaptall-2 (Model 54B). Light (610 grams), compact (58mm filters), focuses insanely close (1.4 meters) while remaining very sharp. The fixed rear element is a compensator for close focusing, so it's really a macro lens as well.

Can't add much to the wisdom: Yes, a 300 mm lens will always be bulky, unless mirror. Thus, mirror.

But you could perhaps try Enna plastic-y, I think they made a 240 mm or so. Whether it is optically good enough... another question.

There are some pumper zooms 60-300 or Soligor/whatever 100-300 but these soften above ~220 mm. The 100-300 needs a lot of light and f8, but is thin and brittle. The 60-300 is better but quite large (though not very heavy).

+1 for the adaptalls. CT300 is the lightest but the SP 54B is better, esp at f5.6, albeit typically twice the price or more. Neither has a tripod mount but tamron made one at the time see here.
Some of the vintage t-mount preset 300's are really quite sharp but the adaptalls are way ahead in terms of coatings, CFD and general design.
The 350mm 06B is very good but sought after and typically ~ 10x the price of the CT300! The SP 23A 60-300mm is pretty much as sharp as the 54B and has a remarkably strong macro mode 1:1.55x mag (!) as well as all round quality. It is however 50% heavier and it doesn't have a tripod mount. A cheap 66mm ID chinese one can be modded to fit (~63mm ID needed) in front of the aperture ring, which only blocks the 60-100mm end of the focal range.

If you are using a mirrorless camera then an excellent alternative is the canon CFD mount 300mm f5.6. Similar in price typically and at least equal optically if not better than the CT300.

The Chinon is just a rebadged fixed mount (M42) adaptall CT300.

I've been looking for the tamron made 250mm f4.5 Nordentro mentions to complement the 350mm and 400mm of the same era I have, but I haven't seen a single one!

By happenstance i now have a T-xxxx 250mm f4.5 Happy Dog

Txxxx Soligor(or Taisei/Tamron branded) T-mount 250/4.5 Tamrons are probably the lightest available for this requirement, but certainly not the shortest. Extremely simple lens.

Or for that matter the Soligor/Taisei 300/5.6 or 350/5.6 T-mount Tamrons.
All very light.

I have that Enna 240mm as Corfield and it is indeed very small, but not the best performer Wink
