I have been holding out until I had a few good shots to present.
This is a dream lens for me and I found a super like new copy.
The lens is in Zeiss Contax RF mount. I fit it to the R D1 with an adapter that Klaus graciously gave me. Thanks again Klaus
Focusing with a 85mm on the RD 1 is a new experience.
I have a couple short teles now but have mostly very little experience with longer lenses on any RF.
I will need to practice a bunch before shooting some slides to see what this old boy can really do.
The lens is absolutely the aaa that I have. Here are some quick and dirty glam shots.
Also some less quick samples. I hope to hear what you think
F2
F4
Zeiss colors F4 iso800
OOF Highlight comparison F2, F4, and F8
F2 Paco of course iso200
F4 very real skin tones WB fixed at 5200K for all shots today
F4 again Michelles Birthday today!
Some flare and missed focus at f2 makes a nice atmosphere

Thanks for the comments guys.
I hope you all looked at the Imagshack link of Paco.
This lens is a beauty portrait lens.
That sample at f2 is just the perfect amount of sharpness and CreamyButterBokehville.
@ Poilu
Thanks I will pass it along to her.
@ Orio
The OOFHL is the thing that is most remarkable. It has one of the nicest I have seen.
Plus OOF areas without contrasting highlights are simply liquid.
I'm a bit tripped out to finally have this lens. It is more then I ever expected in terms of feel in use and IQ.
And it cost less then a new Voigtlander 3.5/90.
The purchase of a Contax to Leica M adapter is a very good investment for Leica M shooters.
CZJ lenses in LTM are 2-4 times the same cost as Contax RF mount and Optons are not going to be found.

A few new "sample" shots here. This time with the M
It looks like I may need to sell this lens and some others.
I wanted to do a few samples to see where I was with this one.
It was only a year ago I got it and have yet to really work it into rotation.
Tomorrow I have a Portrait session and will bring this guy along.
Hopefully I'll have some leave to post some samples here.
None of these is perfect. I'm a bit surprised by the 3D effect in the shot of the poppies.
Also the lens handles backlight really well. Flare not so well. The crop of the beaded fish also shows little to no CA. Pretty good for a 70yo lens.
I likely will replace a couple of these with some more interesting. Click on the image in each new window until you are at full size
#1 Wide open at minimum focus distance
Wide open back light
Tight Crop
Busy bokeh challenge Wide open. notice how thin DOF is on the post and curve of wood rail
3D me at f4 sorry the focus is too close to make a nice picture but, you get the idea. This lens is a gem for Zeissyness
Tight Crop

Looks definitely fantastic! Very three-dimensional, I agree with you, the OOF highlights are incredible pleasing, wow.
Don't sell it, if you can.
I really would like to see pictures from the portrait session, hopefully. _________________

Actually I had trouble with the upload and put them at image shack. I can try and put them here later.
Usually I only use imagshack for very large sizes.
Just right click (control clic mac) and open in a new tab.
Thanks all for your comments.
It's a really sweet lens. I'm honored to be able to use it.
Shall add more soon from digital and film. _________________ Moderator |
