All with R D1 and CV 1.4/40 or 4/15 (maybe I have not looked at those yet).
Iso 1600 and handheld.
I should have taken the 5d and an AF Laughing
It was so dark to focus an RF . Anyway a few good ones.
I will post them one at a time as I have time to do so.

Nice series Andy!
I love the close shot of the woman, it has something Felliniesque Smile
Don't wish for autofocus, it even is worse than manual in night time Laughing

fantastic night!
my favorites are with the man who light his cigarette with the big flame and the woman shot ( I got shocked! crazy shot Shocked )

The third one is fantastic, too bad the flame is just a bit out of the frame (but it was impossible to frame in advance, so great job nonetheless).

Also the 4th is impressive! But all the series is top quality.

Thanks Guys
There are a few more here.
These are definetly not printable in color with all the noise.
A couple might be cool in B+W.
I'm with you Poilu the Ciggy Light shot is my fav also.
I don't have an AF so thanks for the vote Orio. I never tried any nightime AF shots yet. Only in the store have I used the AF much.
I traded one lens with EdSawyer and got a EF 1.8/50 with the metal mount maybe I will try that one some time.

This one is a friend and Hottae! Twisted Evil

I love these photos Andy.

They are all fantastic really. I never shoot like this, nor thought
about it.

Very nicely done. I've often heard of and seen some pictures of the
Burning Man events, but never like this.

It's easy to see that your 40D does better at 1600 ISO than my 400D.

You must be very near to the fire/guy on #3.

Thanks Koji , Craig, And Khidhir Very Happy

Yes, Khidhir I was pretty close but not what you may think.
The R D1 has a crop factor of x1.53 so the 40m lens was in the FL range of a slightly longer normal rather than a slightly shorter one.
Focus was extremely difficult in this scene and composition also.
Timing the firespitter and trying to hold steady while following him was tough.
Here is another shot of him that worked. There are a few more misses that I will not post.
These are probably the last three from this series.
I have been invited to shoot an event next month.
That one spans some daylight hrs and will I will lay off the libations as well for more keepers Wink
Not really my cup of tea this crowd but fun none the less.

This Performance was quite unusual and the remaining shots of it are not appropriate for a family website like ours Embarassed

Great series, Andy! Love the lighting in the last two. You certainly have a
handle on nighttime shots!

These are SO fine, Andy. I am shocked at the success of nighttime shots. No doubt very difficult indeed. Shocked

You indicate you had trouble with composition but man, the ones that you've shown here are simply gorgeous in their balance and comp!

Focus was more than likely "zone focus" I would think?

Simply magnificent group of images.

Excellent series, Andy! All the "flaws" (blurred, camera shake etc.) really add to the atmosphere!

Andy

The most difficult conditions possible and you pulled it off! Absolutely masterly. Looks like a great event
