Well FINALLY I got some shots of one of these guys. Just pure luck that :
a) Dog wasn't nearby to chase them off
b) Had the right lens on the camera
c) I didn't scare them off by accident myself

All iso 200, first white one at f/3.5, rest stopped down to half stop between 4 & 5.6 (f/4.8?).

Ok, first, what a normal wallaby looks like :

And the White Albino one :

Interesting. At a nearby, former Army base where they used to store nuclear weapons, there are albino deer. Of course, locals always maintained it was the radiation that caused it. Wink

They're wild. I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think they're a protected species.

The story I heard was that someone was keeping a bunch of them fenced in and the interbreeding resulted in the albinos. They were then released at some point and the albino ones have mixed with the wild ones. Resulting in enough concentration of albino genes in a fairly small gene pool (isolated on the island, limited amount land etc).

They are fairly common here and not that hard to find. I'd say about 1 in 20 or so is albino. They are pretty easily spooked though. I've been trying to get shots like this for almost two years!
