Asahi Super Takumar 50mm f1.4 bokeh test.
Canon 20d and no post processing (they're a bit dark- normally I'd have adjusted the exposure in PhotoShop). I hope they're not too bad....

Aperture test shots from F16 down to F1.4. Each thumbnail is clickable to a larger version.

I thought I joined last year but seems I didn't, so here's my hello Smile

EDIT: the images show in PREVIEW but not in the post. Don't have time now to do this all again but will have another go tomorrow.

Enquiring minds want to know, if you set the aperture back to f/16 does the glass refill with beer?

Bokeh wide open is a bit bright edged on the highlights, for my taste, but it settles down nicely by f/2. Thanks for posting this comparison.

I'm not sure if I owe the thanks to this forum but these shots get quite a few hits on flickr. I must use this lens more often... and give it a try on my 5d2 Smile

do they get hits because of the beer or because of the bokeh? Wink

The bokeh at 1,4 is a dream to me, very pleasent like the smc usually is.

Welcome! An excellent start. I like the idea of blurriness increasing with the amount of beer consumed Smile

For me, f2.0 s fine, but I'm sorry, the bokeh at f1.4 is not for me. It is too harsh and distracting for this subject.

This f/1.4 bokeh is what lots of people would describe has a "bad" bokeh, since it produces pretty rough edges. Probably a great lens but probably a bit overrated, at least @ f/1.4.

Overrated at 1,4? I don't think so.


If you look to the image taken at 1,4, you should see that the colors of the bottle are very good, like in the glass and the table. The contrast doesn't show excesive low nor high, a normal or medium one. Normal rendering for the 1,4 aperture till now.

The resolution power is good too at the center (the place where is the focus point).

The bokeh? Well, here is very subjective matter. I like it but someone should not like that. A question of taste, no more.

I don't think that a lens with that character at 1,4 is overrated. And don't forget that here we 're speacking about the S.T. not the SMC ( a better lens) which is the best rated takumar 1,4/50.

Phew, it's a relief to hear that it's a nice lens. I got one a while ago, but haven't always loved the results. See close crop from a photo recently taken .. I get these purple fringes around highlighted white areas.
