My new toy, the 28-45mm 4.5, introduced in August 1975, was the first mass manufactured wideangle zoom by Nikon and the first wide angle zoom ever with a minimum focal length of 28mm. It was a pro lens, about 20.000 copies produced between 1975 and 1978. The 28-45 was discontinued when the Zoom-Nikkor 25-50 mm f/4 was released in 1979.

This is a two-ring design, with 11 elements in 7 groups, aperture scale 4.5 – 22, seven blades. The lens focuses down to 60 cms. It´s quite hefty at 440 grams. Filter size is 72 mm.

The serial numbers start from 174011. Mine is 177831 so it might be originally K- version, converted to AI. AI version numbers start from 187322. (Info from Ronald Vink´s page: http://www.photosynthesis.co.nz/nikon/serialno.html)

Some samples:

1. 28 mm wide open - well, at 4.5 the opening is not so wide...

2. 28 mm at f/4.5

3. 28 mm f/8

4. Some sources say, that this lens is unusable in backlit situations.
Yes, it flares, but not so badly, IMHO.

Interesting lens -- I didn't know of that one. Thanks for posting!

A milestone lens really.

It is said that the Zuiko 28-48 f4 is practically a copy of this Nikkor.

I can understand, why this lens was not so popular - not much FL range, dim viewfinder with f/4.5 max aperture - this lens is not so easy to focus, at least with any screen. And the 72 mm filter ring meant, that you had to buy a new set, if you had been using Nikon´s standard 52 mm filters.

At least the lens looks good on my D700. Smile
