Obviously very nice lens. I wonder though how themoleman feels about price v performance.

Price vs. Performance is fair in my opinion. I know most of this stuff works through diminishing returns so I didn't really expect a lens 3x better than the Tak 2/35. What would 3x better actually look like anyways? It's superior in every way except CA, which it's about equal on. I'm happy.

It's a lens that will last for sure. All metal construction. Feels considerably more solid than the Takumar that has been around for 40+ years. Most people spend a hell of a lot more on plasticy zooms that I doubt will survive a decade.

Well, to be 3x better than Takumar it would have to bring 3x joy. That's the only metric that makes sense to me.

Basically all AF stuff is not going to last, not just plastic zooms. Electronics and motors are probably the most vulnerable parts anyway, and once that gone, the lens is gone. And then, when the mount becomes obsolete the lenses will be gone too, unlike all mechanical ones.

Funny enough I find the motors and such are pretty hard wearing on modern lenses - its those goddam ribbon flex cables that dont last 5 minutes

It depends on how much space you have. Laughing

As a general rule though I usually sell anything that I haven't used in over a year. Excepting a few old folders that look nice on the shelf and a couple of rarities. So things move into and out of the "collection" on a fairly normal (albeit slow) basis.

I have a few "character lenses" in my armory, because sharpness is only part of the picture. But the same with anything else, if they don't get used, I rid myself of them.

Congrats, you are doomed.

I walked the same path and sold off ~200 lenses to get my favorites per FL.

I managed to downsize to have a small kit ... per mount type Laughing

My fav c/y lenses + my fav M mount lenses + my fav m42 lenses + my fav EF etc.

Point being, where I reached was a domination point of lenses and the bodies became mere digital backs

And a hole in my bank account that dwarves Goliath Laughing

Nevertheless, the journey to me is as important as the destination. Nice shots so far, keep em rolling and spend more time outdoors than in so the collector goes fishing and the photographer goes shooting.

Would you consider a Samyang 1.4/35mm to be a worthy opponent?

I investigated the Samyang. On paper it looks impressive. Optically I'm sure it would be the equal if a cut above the distagon.

Why I chose the Distagon:
1.) I read too many things reading "how to adjust for infinity on the Samyang" and all that. On a new lens, I don't want to have to do that. It shows poor QC.
2.) Samyang is Sony/Minolta mount. I treat my a850 as an m42 camera. Would have to take off adapter every time. And all 35mm film cameras are m42. I wouldn't be able to use the Samyang on film without buying more annoying equipment. The point was to consolidate, not expand.
3.) The Samyang is not chipped. Couldn't use the IS feature of the Sony.
4.) My m42 adapter has a f2/35mm setting. Perfect!
5.) Distagon is old-school metal construction. Samyang is probably made out of a nice, durable plastic but its still not metal.
6.) Samyang will not retain value. Mass produced. Only for Sony users - limited demand.
7.) It's a Zeiss! Quality coating (not sure how the UMC compares). Dimensional rendering.

I guess your needs were a bit specific. A comparison of both lenses would be nice. Did someone already made it perhaps?
