Not my most used FL but I have found a few gems.

The top picks from what I have would be:

Jupiter 11
Old version of Minolta Rokkor PF
Hexanon 3.2

Here's the Hexanon:

One from the Rokkor PF:

after reading this, I think one needs two or three 135 in their setup... one sharp, one creamy and one swirly!

any report or opinion on the Fujinon EBC? I'm monitoring a SMCTakumar 2.5, a Jair 11 and I'm struggling to find the hexanon 3.2...

Well here's an excellent one that I'm selling....

If you are interested in it, I will discount it for you Smile

I've probably (only) had around a dozen or so 135's over the years, all but two of them have been released into the wild for various reasons.

The only two I have kept are the Zeiss 135/3.5 and the Vivitar Series 1 135/2.3

The Zeiss is small, light, sharp and has that 3D-pop.

The S1 is heavier and bigger but it's very sharp and has even more pop than the Zeiss. In fact, on several occasions, people have suggested that I pasted an object into an image, that's how much pop it can produce.

The Zeiss only comes out if I'm trying to travel light, 90% of the time the Series 1 comes with me.

Even though i prefer 100mm and 200mm for photography, i have tested quite a few 135mm lenses, among them the following:

Canon FL 2.5/135mm
Canon FD 2.5/135mm (different computation from the FL!)
Canon FD 3.5/135mm
Canon nFD 2.8/135mm
Canon nFD 2/135mm
Elicar 2.8/135mm
Enna Ennalyt 2.8/135mm
Konica Hexanon AR 3.5/135mm (second, new computation)
Konica Hexanon AR 3.2/135mm
Konica Hexanon AR 2.5/135mm
Mamiya Sekor E 3.5/135mm (only on film!)
Mamiya Sekor CS and E 3.5/135mm (only on film!)
Minolta SR 4/135mm
Minolta AR 2.8/135mm [6 lens version]
Minolta MC 2.8/135mm [6 lens version, new computation]
Minolta MC/MD 2.8/135mm [4 lens version]
Minolta MD 2.8/135mm [5 lens version]
Minolta AF 2.8/135mm
Minolta MC and MD 3.5/135mm (various versions with 4 and 5 lenses)
Minolta MD 2/135mm
Nikkor AiS 2/135mm
Pentacon 2.8/135mm (M42)
Sony Zeiss ZA 1.8/135mm
Tokina RMC 2.8/135mm
Yashica ML 2.8/135mm C
Zeiss Jena Sonnar 4/135mm (pre-war, uncoated, Contax RF)
Zeiss Jena Sonnar 3.5/135mm (M42, multicoated)
Zeiss Oberkochen CY Sonnar 2.8/135mm
Topcor RE 3.5/135mm

Many of theses lenses are - for practical purposes on 24MP FF - quite similar. They differ

* a little bit more (or less) contrast wider open
* a little bit more (or less) CAs
* CAs corrected at full aperture, but not at f5.6 (or vice versa)
* slightly more (or less) corner resolution

The best lens in the list given above is without any doubt the Sony Zeiss ZA 1.8/135mm - but it's not a MF lens, of course. The sharpest MF lens (again from the list given above) is the Zeiss CY 2.8/135mm. For portraiture, however, i would go for either of the mentioned 2/135mm lenses or - depending on the budget - for the Hexanon 2.5/135mm.

Of course there are better 135mm MF lenses, eg. the Zeiss APO Sonnar 2/135mm, but i've never used them personally. An FF test on artaphot may follow, but i dont' promise anything yet Wink

Stephan: Great list of lenses!!!! While I have way too many 135mm lenses, my assortment cannot compare to yours. I do thank you for all the work you have already done in testing and reporting on artaphot; I go there whenever I have questions about Minolta lenses. I decided on my Rokkor PF after viewing your report.

Testing lenses can certainly provide useful information, but there will always be the subjective factor and that will be different between different people. There are also other factors like minimum focus distance. It is difficult to capture all the factors and nuances, so most of us look at sharpness, then evaluate the lens in use. I wonder, is your personal favorite the same as the best performing one in your tests?

For those of us with spending constraints, we must also consider diminishing returns. I would love to have the Zeiss 1.8/135 but for the cost and aside from the lack of external aperture control, but the cost relative to any improvement over my others makes it hard to justify. Of course, if I hadn't purchased all the others I might have put the same money into the Zeiss, but I didn't realize that until I got to where I am.

It is surprising to see how many you have tried, yet surprising also to see some missing from the list. Those missing that I have found most glaring are Series 1, Tair, and Fujinon f/2.5. Another more recent player is the Samyang f/2.

My list:
Minolta Rokkor MC PF 135 2.8 , MD 135 2.8 (4/4), MD IIi 135 3.5, Hexanon 135 3.2, Jupiiter 36 A MC 135 3.5, Leitz Tele Elmar 135 f4 and around 135mm Pentax 120 2.8 and Super Tak 150 f4.

If I had to keep only one ....between Tele Elmar and Jupiter. I think Jupiter .
Biggest disappointment : Hexanon because of its reputation . Sharp but I don't like the bokeh .

Meyer 4.5/135

...the one I have. Minolta MD rokkor 5/5 (last version with hood included). Very light and compact. Gives eq 200 mm on APS C

Not sure whether it is better or worse than others quality wise but very convenient (I suppose like the Olympus)

So I managed to grab for cheap a hexanon 3.2 and a smc Tak v2 (with some scratches on the front coat)

I'll keep you updated. Theorically now I'll have a tack sharp and a creamy one.

This post is really getting interesting.thanks really to all you people that have or had an enormous number of lenses!!

True. One reason is that most of them are very similar designs, mostly derivations/copies of the Sonnar.

Although occasionally a crap copy comes along because either someone has messed with it or it slipped through the QC process at the factory. I had a Zeiss Triotar someone had had apart and put back together wrong so the spacing of the elements was wrong, this made it have a ton of SA and was effectively, a soft focus lens. I also had a Vivitar S1 2.3/135 that was assembled wrong from the factory, it was truly unusable.

In the mean time i've added a Zeiss CY Sonnar 2.8/135mm, because of this thread Wink

Absolutely, YES!! I always try to say that "corner resolution" is one of many aspects, and certainly not the only one. And i really enjoy others contributing about other aspects of a certain lens!!

When it comes to overall performance, i would say the Sony Zeiss ZA 1.8/135mm, especially together with the sublime colors of the A900/A850 series (much better than the A7 series!!). It is perfect for both landscape (even at f1.8!!), and for portraits as well. In fact, i have published landscape 32x48cm size book images taken at f1.8. Corner resolution is perfect.

From the MF lenses mentioned above, the Zeiss CY 2.8/135mm is the sharpest, especially at f2.8. For portraits i usually take the Canon nFD 2/135mm, which has a good resolution at f2. It has a nice bokeh, and not too much contrast. It is not too heavy (the ZA 1.8/135mm is much too big/heavy), and its focusing is smoother than the Nikkor AiS or Minolta MD 2/135mm lenses. But the two latter are very nice for portraits, too.

Some years ago i was thinking about getting the ZA 1.8/135, but is was simply too big (i've been using it for 1-2 weeks before making my decision). In addition - and that was a serious "con" to me! - its manual focusing isn's smooth at all: Its focusing ring has quite a lot of "play", and this makes precise manual focusing a pain (the last generation of Minolta G lenses has similar problems, eg the MinAF 1.4/85mm, but also the last generation of the MinAF 2.8/50mm Macro and 2.8/100mm Macro).

Apart from Minolta glass, which i do collect to some extent, i usually take what i find at local shops, flea markets and the like. So my list reflects to some extent the MF 135mm lenses commonly used here in Switzerland ...
Today it was a Minolta X-300 (like new) with an MD-I 1.4/50mm (like new as well, a lens missing in my collection) and a MD-II 2/85mm (new, in its box) for CHF/USD/EUR 30.-- ...

Of course the more recent high performance 2/135mm lenses are another league. I would include here the Zeiss ZF end ZE Apo Sonnar 2/135mm, and the Canon / Nikon AF lenses.

Awesome list of 135 's

My favorite last year:
Nikon DC 135 f2.0
Contax Zeiss 135 f2.0
Canon nFD 135 f2.0
Tamron AD2 135 f2.5
and Sony Zeiss 135 f1.8 ZA
