Overpriced and seriously overhyped by the seller. This is NOT the ML lens, which is indeed a very good mirror worth some $200-250. The one on sale is an older model, which is softer and has higher vignetting. Recommended for way under $200. _________________ List of lenses |

Yashica made a Dental Mirror for years and years that was an excellent lens, but I believe it was useful only for macro work. It was an 800mm as I recall. Just mentioning this to put it on record that Yashica definitely knew how to build mirror optics.
I think I'd probably pay attention to what aoleg has to say about them, though. Sounds like he's had some experience with them.
Yeah, I don't care for the seller's hype either. And really, how knowledgeable can the guy be when he makes a whopper of a mistake, referring to the lens as a 500mm f/1.8. Pullease! A 500mm f/1.8 would be approximately 250mm in diameter!
I can understand a single typo, but the guy made two and doesn't state the correct aperture until it's buried in the text description. So, either he's clueless to the differences, lazy, or trying to lure people into his auction by deliberately mis-representing the item. _________________ Michael

Hmm ... are you talking about a real "lens" or some "dental mirror" hanging above the patient?
If the first - is there any literature on that 800mm thing? _________________ Visit the Yashica Information Site! |

Urk! Never mind! I must have been thinking of something else. Yashica made a camera-lens combo called the Dental Eye. The lens has a built-in ring flash and looks a bit like a mirror at a casual glance. This one has a 100mm f/4 macro lens:

You're right, the lens here is breathlessly over-sold. As to the f/1.8, I think what he's done is to conflate two f/ratio notation systems, where f/8 is sometimes expressed as F 1:8, and ended up with f/1.8. The confusion may be unintended. Either way, his limited knowledge of what he's gushing over doesn't inspire confidence. _________________ Alex |

Indeed ... in fact there have been 4 incarnations of some "Dental Eye", the first one (extremely uncommon) being a converted Electro 35 if I remember correctly, then the standard
- ( ) Electro GT Oral Eye (4/55) based on a Electro 35 GT
- (1983) Dental Eye (4/55) based on a FX-3 Super body
- (1988) Dental Eye II (4/100) based on a 109MP body
- (1995) Dental Eye III (4/100) said to be based on a Contax RX body _________________ Visit the Yashica Information Site! |
