44-2 or 44 are the best for me. Some 44-3 may be a bit tricky to adapt, so, to avoid problem, better choose another one. But, all 44 are still very good, you won't be desapointed if you buy a 44M4, for exemple. _________________ Pierre

My vote for 44-2 if you are looking for the 58/2 option.
If you are open to other Helios suggestions, then 77M-4 is well worth considering. |

I have owned 44-2. 44M and 44M-4 lenses and they were all able to do more than I am capable of. Just buy the first good condition one you can afford and enjoy it. You WILL end up owning more in the future, I guarantee. _________________ Lots of 35mm Film Cameras

The leaf is barely 20mm wide, the Helios 44-M was wide open at f2. That's a narrow DoF. One thing missing though, is the swirly bokeh. Many people expect the swirls but they are not inevitable, in fact I rarely get swirls on either the Helios 44-M or the 44-2. I guess it's the way I shoot? I don't really know.
My favorite of the 44-2 or 44-M ? probably the 44-2.

The swirls come in specific circumstances.
1) must be wide open
2) must have contrasting background with many light and dark areas, foliage on a sunny day works well for this
3) the swirlies only occur in a particular part of the focus range, I can't remember exactly, fairly close range. _________________ I welcome C&C, editing my pics and reposting them on the forum is fine.

I would go for the 44-2 from KMZ factory, or even older 44, 44 is in both M42 and M39 available.
44-3 is from MMZ factory in Belarus which doesn't have a good reputation.
Maybe you will get it cheaper with an Zent-E or similar cameras. |

Honestly, I don't think there are much risks to buy an MMZ lens. I have a 44 from MMZ, and another one from KMZ, hard to see difference in quality. _________________ Pierre
