Absolutely. Especially on high res APS-C (24 MP) and in b/w mode it is a very nice "character" portrait lens.
On 24 MP FF the lens is very useable as well, especially wide open in b/w mode. Stopped down it gets very sharp with a high contrast over th entire frame including corners. Certainly not worse than the well known MC Rokkor 1.4/50mm! Quite a bit better than the AR / MC-I 1.4/58mm in my opinion. It seems Minolta was re-computing the original AR 1.4/58mm around 1968 when they got their new in-house "large computer".
During that time they were developing a bunch of excellent lenses including the famous MC 1.2/58mm, the MC 2.8/16mm fisheye, the 2.8/21mm superwide, the fast 2.5/28mm and 1.8/35mm wideangles as well as the 1.7/85 portrait and the 4.5/300mm tele lens. Espeically the wideangles were the fastest retrofocus designs of their time.

Yes. It seems I have pretty good luck on finding this lens but I am not able to find the other 50/75/100 S-Coronar! I will post some samples later after I finish adapting my other copy with a proper hood. This copy may goes to my friend since he is also collecting these. You will find one day if you can wait.

Thanks! I'm sure it's in good hands then. Hope it will be used. Pretty sure many of those lenses are not.

The micro-prism spot screen in the Nikkormat works well with some fast lenses- A good pairing is the "S" 50mm f1.4, or even the 105 shown in your photo. Apart from a bit of practice with that screen, the FTN is still quite a viable camera. The shutter on mine is still accurate.

Oh yeah, I saw them (although those are from 100mm version, but should be similar with 135mm), beautiful results. I have quite few triplets (mostly 50 & 135, but even 17mm c-mount one) and never stopped to be amazed how that simple design, made by hands of old professionals, can produce such a stunning results. |

Yeah, I dont expect too much fun with D-Mount, i have couple of m4/3 cameras but i don't believe this little biotar will perform well on them (same as my Trioplan 17mm in C-Mount, need to crop 27% of the photo to get somewhat usable image).
...but anyways, these 3 lenses were part of the same lot and I was after Victar (and the won all of them for like 21eur) so it's OK, Biotar will be nice future project, especially if i ever get some of those small sensor cameras |
