Picked up my Soligor 180/3.5 after long time and was surprised how tiny it is. Only 14cmx6cm with m42 mount.

I think there are smaller, which is the most compact?

Well, the Olympus 200mm f4 is 127mm long and the Nikkor 200mm f4 is 126mm.
Are there smaller than these?
OH

Nikkor is almost a centimeter thicker.

so is Olympus?

still they have smaller front lens than Soligor (=58mm)

Sorry I left the caps on when measuring.

It is only 13 cm without it (with m42 T-mount adapter).

weight only 430 grams so 100 grams less than Nikkor and 85 grams less than Olympus, still full metal & glass.

I'm starting to respect this lens some more.

There are many 200mm lenses, but only a few really small.

Oly Zuiko 200/5 is probably the smallest and lightest FF 200mm (380g,105mm,49mm,2,5m mfd) with good overall IQ.I have no samples at hand as I use it very seldom.

IMO nothing can beat Sigma Apo Macro 180/5.6 manual focus version as a little ,lightweight macro (1:2) with great IQ.It is slightly bigger than Oly,weights similarly, focuses down to 55mm and bears 52mm filtrer thread.Available in all major mounts. Two big APO glasses minimize CA and make the picture sharp at full aperture. It looks like this:

180/5.6 Sigma + NEX5N as a macro

and at infinity

Other,middle-sized,non-macro, 200mm lenses, that I can recommend from my experience are:

Canon FDn 200/4 - smallest of the bunch, cheap, focuses down to 1,2 afair,good/very good
Yashica ML 200/4 C - 2,5m mfd - good
Canon FD SSC 200/4 - 2.5m mfd - very good
OM Zuiko 200/4 -2,5m mfd - good
Nikon 200/4 AI/S - 2m mfd - very good
Zeiss Tele Tessar C/Y 200/4 - 1.5m mfd - probably the best of the the bunch
Minolta Rokkor MC/MD 200/4 - 2,5m mfd,very good

For f/5.6 lens, Sigma APO 180/56 is indeed small and light (390g/110mm). Unfortunately I have used three and all have either sticky/peeling off barrel coating or disintegrated optical coating. Topcor 200/5.6 is also notable at 440g/127mm. Both lenses have good optics.

If we stick to OP's f/3.5-4, the Sigma-made Spiratone Proxitel YS 200/4 is quite small at 467g/102mm.

To Shapencolour.
You rated canon fdn 200/4 afair/good/very good. Just curious what that means.
I got hold of one not long ago and like it alot. Light and sharp. A bit to easy on the focusing ring.

75-200/4.5 is a thin pipe

M-AF 35-135 is pretty small even more so in the N (plastic) version
