Quite a few companies sold this attachment, it's a sneaky attachment you put on your camera lens to look like you're taking a photo in one direction, but you're actually taking it at a 90 degree angle due to the mirror. Probably mostly used at beaches...

Thanks. I've never seen one. No wonder photographers sometimes get reputations as "creepers".

Wow, they even advertised those attachments for such sneaky / pervert work!
Shocking - even for me at 50 years of age.

From a Spiratone advertisement:

have both of those spiratones, they're all extremely awkward to use (especially on a tripod)

Wow, you weren't kidding! Thanks to this thread I was curious to try one of these devices, so I bought a Spiratone Mirrotach.
It works as advertised, but it's a challenge to use because the image is turned upside down.
Composing a photo becomes an adventure! But that's okay - it just adds to the novelty value. Mr. Green

My Mirrotach came with an attachment ring to fit a 55mm filter thread. And there's a thumbscrew to allow rotation for orientation.
For me, I think the Mirrotach will be most useful for getting low angle shots without the need to crouch or stoop.

I doubt I'll use it much, but I like gimmicks and it's been fun to learn about and try this one.
Here's a sample from today:

#1 (Minolta MC PF 58mm @ f1.4)

The advertising was simply for a long lens (400mm), not for a mirror.
Pervert work? I remember well taking pictures (portraits) at high school, using long lenses (not a 400mm though). Girls were pretty shy back then, unlike these days ...!! And yes, at the end of the year the best of these pictures were shown in class, and everyone had a lot of fun looking at them. Including the girls themselves, of course!! Usually they were sking for a copy, even though they had been reluctant to being portraited before.

After some time they got used to it, and they knew the results would be good. Which meant no more trouble ... and some requests to take ... uhm ... you know what I mean. I politely refused, of course Wink

Things were much more relaxed back then. I hope they'll be again one day, but I doubt.

A lot of things seemded a lot more "relaxed" back then, at least from the men side.

Women in bikini - I think this perhaps not what you did back then?
To take photographs of women on the beach while they not know they are photographed - seems for me like perfect pervert. Waiting until the change the clothes, or do a bit sunbathing without bikini top. Those photographers earn a portion of sand or water on their equipment.
