Well, I'm calling for ideas what to do with that lens head ... collect, convert, sell?

It's a special high lumen lens, most likely from a night vision system, with
adjustable aperture which also allows to completely shut the light path.

Monstrous lens, 95mm front lens diameter, ca 2 Kilo weight, 70mm rear
thread mount. Unsure if made in Jena or Oberkochen, most likely Jena.

first step try it out if produce crap , collection LOL, if looks nice make permanent adapter, 2kg is not much for a super fast 180mm lens.

Register distance ?

Convert and use. If its not too good wide open, then closing it a couple of stops will make it the same speed as a regular 200mm and will probably give better resolution. Only one way to find out!!

I'd love to have a go at converting that lens to use.

I'd make sure it's better than a 2.8/180 Sonnar before spending any money on it. Also, as Attila says, the backfocus might be short.

Not spending any money on it, as I have it already since many years...

Guess I go figure a way out to see how to get some shots with it and see how it performs.

P.S.: I mentioned the options: collect, convert, sell - these are the only ones I'm willing to take into consideration.

Interesting lens, but not compelete and with dents, collectible value is probably low.

I´d made a cradle to put the lens on a tripod and with some plastic or cardboard tubes just hold the body behind the lens to make first shots. Manufacturing a permanent mount part would be tricky, though. Because of the weight, You need a strong extension tube/mount part, preferably with tripod bush, Nikon PN-11 type.

If this is from a night vision system, the lens is possibly not very well corrected for optical flaws and the contrast may be low, but ...
on ne fait pas d'omelette sans casser des œufs.

convert - you cannot let it go before checking it

Unfortunately not one of the mentioned options. But maybe your mechanic can make a nice mount for it?
Then you can try it out on Krisztina and I will feel honored Wink

I think you'll only get votes to convert, we're all curious about how this beast performs, and we wouldn't have to do any of the work!

If I were you, I would sell it!

Most likely I will, but I wonder if I should convert it first and take some pics with it?

You can try sell well first on fix price and if no offer, my offer can come as second. This is less expensive method for sure, probably we will poorer with test photos. If lens mounted properly and create nice pictures I think price will be multiply more than in this stage. This is not a sought after collector item due not looking good on shelf, but if works great a 180mm 1.9 lens can fetc serious price.

Hmm,

Do you have any idea what the coverage is ? Or the back focus ?

Do you have an Exakta Vielzweck bellows ? That should be sturdy enough to take a 2KG lens.

If I had this I would try that route first, at least for testing. The biggest problem would be back focus.

PostPosted: Tue Jul 30, 2013 7:39 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

Yes, I will go the route and convert it, use it and then possibly sell it.

If you have any CAD skills you could make a mount using shapeways (3d printing company) but first you need to know the flange focal distance. If you don't have any CAD skills you could just donate it to me:P (or just make the mount the good old traditional way with a lot of milling and grinding Razz)

I'm a trained engineer - that should answer that Very Happy

And to repeat, "donate" was none of the mentioned options Wink
