P&S about 12 mpix. Not more than 150€.

Preferably optical viewfider and AA-batteries.

Obvious choices are Canon A1200 or A1300 (when it reaches the shops?).

BUT: the A1200 seem to suffer from bad low ISO, no IS also.

Any other choices?

Make it 200€ and get a used Samsung NX100 with 20-50 or e-Pl1 with 14-42!

I've been pondering the same thing, but I don't know that I want yet another camera. Also, what do I base the budget on? It's likely that IQ will be lower than my 5Dii (duh), so I may always regret that I didn't use a better camera to take the shot.

And the most overrated as well, as those finders in the small compacts are mostly useless due to coverage and size!

The benefit is that live view consumes about 2/3 of the power. What I want is just simple camera that could be taken anywhere and is always ready.

Else I could buy a Rollei 425 and save some 40€ for wine and stuff.

(Don't remember if you are German but feel free to spit on the monitor if you like Wink Smile )

edit:
ok, this stuff is really terrible:

umm the camera I carry all the time is my android smartphone, motorola droid bionic, 8MP camera, 1080p video, 2 led flash and it is always with me. It honestly takes pretty decent pictures in most situations, has built in panorama capabilities, and the video is pretty decent. Add to that I can instantly upload to any number of photo storage sites or even plug in microHDMI and play back movies or pictures on any HD TV.

I am sure my next phone will be likely even better. There are phones in development (razr HD Maxx) now that are showing EXIF data @ f2.5 12MP!

If you don't want a smartphone the ipod touch, the samsung galaxy player, the samsung note would also fit the bill and give you way more uses than a P&S will.

For me the smart camera phone kills the P&S.

Don't get me wrong, we got my daughter a very nice Nikon 14mp P&S and it take nice pictures, but she rarely uses it, on the other hand she has taken thousands of pictures with her ipod touch which she always has with her. Ditto my wife, she never uses the P&S but uses her 8mp camera phone all the time.

Mirror-less is the smallest compact camera that has any place in the market and when you go with mirror-less you end up wanting to bring more than one lens and now you have a camera bag and really are you going to carry that with you all the time?

good point, in my USA-centric view I often times forget about the amazing camera phones that both Nokia and Sony-Ericsson have made or are making, that usually never see this shore.

No, but my wife got her hands on that and then nothing to be done.

There are not many compact cameras with optical viewfinder. And a optical viewfinder does not mean that battery will last any longer than with a camera that's good in saving power.

This is a very good list for comparision and to get an overview (in German Language though): http://www.chip.de/bestenlisten/Bestenliste-Digitalkameras--index/detail/id/996/

"Sucher" means viewfinder, "Bildqualität" means optical quality. "Aufnahme min" and "Aufnahmen max" means in this case the number you can take with one battery pack. The rest should explain itself more or less Smile

I bought a second-hand Panny LX-3. I like it a lot.

My ex-dem , £200 Panasonic G1 with standard zoom and superb , Leica screw CV 35mm f2.5 [ £235 new a couple of years back ] which is tiny enough to add to the bag .
I like the 70mm which the crop factor provides .
I now have what was supposed to be a replacement everyday camera - Sony A35 EVF , 35 f 1.8 , not much larger , but the lens makes it more bulky .

Canon Powershot G9 second hand . Has optical viewfinder , IS ,excelent base ISO IQ , very good or useable IQ up to 400 ISO . I got one ,very happy with it until I replaced it with OLY EPL! + kit due to high ISO , but sometimes I miss the retracting 36mm-210mm and 2.8 zoom.
