I saw one of these today in a camera store in great condition for $15. I've searched around on the web and I can't seem to find out anything about it. Does anybody know anything about it?

BTW, I'm new here. After shooting with Pentax for the better part of 2 years, I switched to Canon over the summer. Now that my AF lens collection is complete, I'd like to experiment with some m42 lenses. When I was shooting with Pentax and messing around with some MF lenses then, someone recommended this forum to me.

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum Heather... Very Happy

I dont own this lens but for 15.00 USD it's worth giving it a try. You really wouldnt be losing much if you didnt like the lens.

I own the Viv 24mm 2.8 and find it to be a decent lens. I own better 24mm's than the Viv but I didnt pay much for it, for the price it was worth it.

I've decided to take the plunge and get that Vivitar. I think it'll be a great FL for walking around when I don't want to carry my big Canon 24-105/4 IS (my usual walkaround zoom). I've already gone on Fleabay this morning and found a good BIN deal on an adapter with the focus confirm chip (definitely cheaper than a Katzeye screen).

The only bad thing is that I won't be able to use the lens until the adapter comes. I'm currently on vacation and this would've been a great time to test everything out. Oh well.

What's the serial number of the lens?

Vivitar didn't make lenses so the serial number will give the manufacturer away.

Well, Im not sure that it will make a difference who made the lens when the price is only 15.00 USD. You really cant lose at that price.

If you want to know who made the lens here is a list of the makers:

6 Olympus

9 Cosina

13 Schneider Optik

22 Kino (aka Kiron)

25 Ozone Optical

28 Komine

32 Makinon

33 Asanuma

37 Tokina

42 Bauer

44 Perkin Elmer (US)

47 Chinon

51 Tokyo Trading

56 Kyoe Schoji

75 Hoya Optical

81 Polar

I just checked mine and it starts with 37, meaning that it's Tokina made. If nothing else, it'll help me figure out if I want to continue to go down the m42 road. Between it and the adapter, I've got less than $40 spent. Smile

Heather, you will find that many of these old M42 lenses perform well above your expectations.

Welcome

That is a slippery path. You will find a lot of terrific value lenses among the M42's and this is the place to check them out. Try the galleries to get some ideas. I recently acquired the best (IMHO) value in your FL range - the Distagon 25/2.8, but it is also fairly expensive as MF lenses go.

Welcome here, Heather! The forum is growing in the past months
with female photographers, and it's gratifying to see that
happening.

Heck yes! Only $15 certainly would be a price to try out just
about any lens, even ones that might have a "bad" reputation.
More than once, I've gone ahead and tried lenses that had
poor opinions from photographers, but turned out to be very
nice for me.
