Besides Contax N 16-35 and Contax 21/2.8....
What would be the ultimate wide angle lens that can be used on 5D?

Olympus 21mm (or 18mm), no question...

I was looking at Jena Flektogon 20/4...
How does it compare to OM lenses?

I kindof like the Super-Takumar 20mm f/4.5. But they usually get voted down by the more popular ones Wink.

I really like my Nikkor 20mm 2.8 AIS on crop, and film...

Contrast less, because non MC. You can found plenty of samples with both lenses in mflenses.com/gallery.

For architecture shoots Flektogon is a number one lens.

Tokina AT-X Pro 4/12-24 Wink

Sorry, I do not have an excellent super wide MF lens. The Cosina 3.8/20 is OK and the Vivitar 3.5/17 is very good but not excellent...

I have Olympus OM 18mm and 21mm f3.5 , 21mm perform better on my Olympus E-1. I have no 5D so I can't say anything about that.
If you get a good copy of Flektogon 20mm that is same good performer than Olympus OM 21mm.

Ultimate? Not sure, but the Zeiss Distagon 18mm f/3.5 ZF would be worth considering, I expect.

Edit: or perhaps not.

Zuiko 21 without any question is on par with the best of the best. I have both the 2/21 and 3.5/21. In landscape and architecture situations the 3.5/21 is perfect (no reason to spend more on the 2/21). These lenses are also compact and a pleasure to use. If you are serious I have a 3.5/21 available with caps case and hood(rare) for a member price. Attila and I will do a trade soon and I will get a flektagon 2.8/20. For me the look from this lens is just very pleasant. I love the zeiss and can not resist it. I know that Attila has a 4/20 for sale right now if you prefer the Zeissy look you should check with him. Cool

My humble examples (hard to find these not on my HP) are in order. Sorry for no similar
shot with Nikkor Ai20/2.8 for Venetian glass shop.

Can you guess which is which, the order is
Flektogon, ML21/3.5,Zuiko21/2,Flek20,Ml21,Zuiko21,Ai20/2.8,Ai20.

Hard to decide which one is the best in my case, I personally prefer less distotion
but in this case they all have gull-wing distortion, probably CZ Distagon 21/2.8 too,
which I do not own.

Sharpness champ is somehow Ai20/2.8 IMHO, but fairly strong barrel distortion in
near field (you can see it in the umbrella pole, near is much worse). Flek needs to
go F11 to get good sharpness, Zuiko is slightly better I am not sure. ML21 has
cooler colour rendition but not bad at all if you did not use the other lenses. By the way
the last one was our backyard when we lived in the house. For the better photo
you may have to go RF lenses such as G-distagon 21/2.8, CZ distagon 21/4.5 or 2.8
made by Cosina, and some other 20-sh lens made by Leica.

Nice presentation, thank you! Are rangefinders significantly betters ?

PostPosted: Mon Aug 04, 2008 9:55 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

At least they have almost/practically no distortion (for lenses I mentioned in the above), the most have light fall off at the corners with wide open since they have Biogon style symmetrical optical design unlike retro-focus one which excels the lower vignetting. The problem is you cannot precisely frame the scene. Like this,,,

The first one is by Zeiss Biogon 25/2.8 M-mount (not wide like <20mm), the second one by CV Super Wide Heliar 15/4.5, and the last one by G-Biogon 21/2.8.
Oh, I always use Adobe 1988(?) colour space and never converted to sRGB space before uploading to here. Baybe should I?

nope, stick with Adobe 1998. Only as a last step before you export/save choose to convert to a different profile ie. sRGB to save as JPEG.
Not converting to sRGB will make your pics on the net look washed out.

If you are printing you will want to stay with Adobe 1998 as it has a wider color space and therefore preserves more information in the photo which is needed when printing or post processing images.

nice images btw Smile

The ML looks really NICE Surprised I have one now and have not really put it to task. It is usually not so expensive as the other, although, more rare. At least for the copy I have and others I have seen sold. This is a nice comparison. Thankyou for posting it Very Happy

Finally I got Ai20/2.8S shot at the same place, though it is not opened yet so dark and somehow not many items today.

This last photo shows awful distortions for me. Sad

I really love the Biogon images above, especially the Budapest one.
