Name ring and front element.

Manufacture origin markings.

Aperture ring and lens scales.

I'm inclined to believe (after all the digging I've done) that this is a Chinon made lens. There are differing opinions~ the ones that are more plausible are Cimko, and to a lesser extent, later Tomioka, which all seem to be loosely related anyways. Chinon makes the most sense to me from what I've seen and read, but nothing cast in stone yet.

Wide open sample here at MFD and ISO 200 under heavy overcast skies.
Quite interesting rendering.
A few quick snaps reveal a lot of distortion. MFD is about a foot according to the scale on the lens. Slight tendency for swirl bokeh, which actually matters little to me, so far.

I had posted about this lens earlier, when I bought it, but the post seems to have disappeared.

Finally got it A/I converted last night. The too small outer diameter of the aperture ring was a bit of a challenge.

There's slight haze over one of the inner rear elements, but it doesn't seem to have much effect on I/Q.

I think this lens and the similar Chinon badged lenses were made by Sun.

http://camera-wiki.org/wiki/Chinon

There is a section on 35mm camera lenses near bottom of the page.
Not a lot of reliable information around to be had on these.

Edit:

Note how Sun inserted it's self into the conversation with only a filter. Razz

This un-worked image at wide open f2.8 shows a fair amount of distortion, and vignette. ( no filter or hood used here )
I need to play with it a bit more and see how it performs stopped down. Apart from the distortion, it seems to make usable images.

I agree that this is probably made by sun. It looks like the copy here is for Nikon, which would explain the right to left aperture order ((Sun uses a reverse order for m42 like seen on m42lens.com https://m42lens.com/m42-lens-database/687-avanar-dyna-coated-28mm-f-2-8-22) The plastic auto manual switch is also typical of Sun (That also would not be present on F-mount).

Thanks for the in-put. There are very few photo's of this lens around with it's 62mm filter thread size.

Maybe but I think the Manufacturer based serials had 7 digits like here (this is Sun)/(allensauctions on eBay)

Yours may or may not be Sun. Could also be Tokina.
