I found the following zooms in the 70-150 mm range, and don't knwo which to buy
1- Canon nFD 70-150/4,5
2- Kiron (with Kiron brand) 70-150/4 push-pull
3- Konica 70-150/4
4-Vivitar (Kiron) 70-150/3,8 V.1
5-Vivitar (Tokina) 70-150/3,8 V.1
6-Osawa MC 70-150/3,8 - similar to Vivitar V.1
7-Olympus 75-150/4 (N° 374.xxx). It seems to be no MC
I read excellent things about the MD Minolta but I can't find any .
So, what do the partners think about those 7 lenses.
Which to buy.
Thanks in advance. |

I have the Konica and the Olympus, used the Konica quite a bit, not used the Oly much.
The Konica is very good, very sharp for an old zoom, but can't quite reach the sharpness of the Konica 135mm primes. Contrast is a little lower than a 135mm prime too, but it renders very nicely and is very well built.
The Oly is very well built too and has a very good reputation, it's also very easy to find and dirt cheap.
I can take mine out tomorrow and make some samples if it would help. _________________ I don't care who designed it, who made it or what country it comes from - I just enjoy using it! |

I had read it, and seems that Canon nFD is the lens to go for, as the Minolta MD is not available |

I had the Konica long time ago, when I used Konica in film era.
When I bought the Hexanon 85/1,8 sold my zoom 75/150.
I remember the zoom as sharp lens with very good contrast. |

I saw that test, and it's very good, great job.
I could understand that the "fight" was about the minolta or the hexanon leadership.
But when alkmost all speack about the Canon nFD zoom, were all agree that it was among
the best. |

Nikkor E 3.5/75-150mm
Olympus Zuiko OM 4/70-150mm
Canon and Minolta both are very good; the Canon is heavier and slower than the Minolta, though.
The Konica can't compete with the Canon / Minolta (yep, i've tested two samples).
Even worse is the Oly (two samples tested as well); it is one of the worst OEM zooms i've ever tested (apart from really old zooms such as the Minolta 3.5/80-160mm from the early '60s).
The Nikkor was found in wastebin of local photo shop only a few days ago; i have not tested it yet.

I've got a Tamron Adaptall-2 70-150mm F/3.5 Model 20A: which is a good lens, maybe not Tamron's finest but still very good. it's sharp enough, the CA isn't bad - easily fixed in PP anyway, and it's a nice compact, cheap lens. I like mine even though it doesn't get a lot of use, but that's because I go for the very good 70-210's that I've got when I want to use a zoom.
Is the 20A as good as the Tamron 19AH 70-210 ? Probably not, but I think you would be pixel peeping to see any great fault with the 20A. _________________ LENSES & CAMERAS FOR SALE.....

I've tried a few on that list of yours (Kiron, Konica, Vivitar and a Tamron). No scientific tests, just my own eyes and opinion on everyday pictures: i'd say go for a Minolta!
The Minolta is really very nice, they're not rare, just be patient if you want one.

Why this obsession with the corners of an image? For the majority of users, the corners are outside the area of their APS-C and M4/3 sensors.
Also, I'd say your copy of the Konica is faulty, mine performs better than that by a large margin.
The Konica isn't a UC lens either.
I think you do your best to maximise the flaws in a lens' performance, which is diametrically opposed to how the vast majority of people work - they do their best to eek the maximum performance from the lenses they have.
Despite the poor results you show, the Konica 4/70-150 IS a very capable lens, able to produce more than satisfactory results even in very bad conditions, as I showed a few years ago:

Thanks everybody for your comments.
It seems that there are more than one very good lens here.
But the Canon nFD and the Minolta are in almost all the good references.
So both are in the center of the bang, I guess. |

There are two (AFAIK) different coated in the Canon nFD 75/150 lenses.
Please, can you tell me the three first digits of the serial number of the lens you used for the test?
Thanks |

Interesting - where did you get that information from?
I can provide the serials of my copy later on (ie tomorrow).

Bob Shell wrote in the Shutterbug magazine that in the 70/150 lenses, the serial number >200.001 had the last coated. So it may be better rendering, I guess. |

I like the Kiron (Viv) 70-150 f/3.8: very small, light, nice build &, of course, takes beautiful pics. I've got the 1-ring version--reminds me of my old Nikon E-Series 75-150 f/4, without the zoom creep--that Nikkor took beautiful pics, but is plagued with zoom-creep propensities. jt |

And like the Canon FDn 200mm f4 - another excellent lens - it is still available very cheaply in the marketplace.
One in mint condition sold for $15 recently.
This is a lens that sold new in 1979 for 45,000 yen.
That is over $15,000 in today's money
I think it could be considered a bargain today
