Mir-1 does Sydney.

Hi all,
I acquired this lens from eBay for $20USD which is about 10 times cheaper than what you would pay for a second hand Zeiss Flektogon 35mm f/2.8.
As you can see the lens has seen a lot of use, but the glass is in mint condition.

So here are some of the photos taken with Mir-1 which shows the character of this lens.
Most of these photos are taken handheld. For some of them I used whatever I can find to stabilize the camera.

Mir-1 goes to Sydney:

Landing was rough.

Sydney Centre Point Tower

Monorail at Darling Harbor. Mir-1 is so prone to flare that it causes headache to some people. Smile

Maritime Museum

And the cherry of the cake the stitched pano. I used one of the poles (like the white poles on the right) to stabilize the camera

My observations are:
1. It is a lens with a very interesting character.
2. It has problems with flare, which a small hood would easily fix.
3. The lens is sharp enough even wide open and much better than a modern Mir-1B.

My conclusion is that it is definitely a keeper.

Thanks.

Thanks for the very nice Sidney tour, all very nice images and there are some that I really love like the second to last one.
I agree about your conclusion on the lens, I used to have two copies of it, one was a 00 prototype with Russian engraving, which I sold to Andy, I am keeping a more common one (but still aluminium). I also have a black 1V.

Thanks Orio,

I always appreciate your feedback. You seems to have great experience with a lot of the manual focus lenses.

Cheers,

Voe

I just checked Sidney's temperatures it seems that the winter there is really mild. I wish we could have 18°C here during our winter. Imagine the saving in heating bill!

This is the opposite view, looking down on Darling Harbour from the top of the Centrepoint Tower. Sorry about the reflections.

This often is the best evidence for a good lens.

Beautiful! My experience is like Attila. You got much nicer results than I have had so far. Although my copy is a good one. I have trouble focusing with this lens. These shots make me want to give another try. Cool

In regards to focusing I learned to rely on the focus confirmation indicator on my camera, and most of the time it nails the focus better than if I trust my own eyes looking through the viewfinder especially when the DoF is larger.

Thank you all for your feedback.

Excellent shots, congrats!
Very well exposed in a difficult light situation. Colouring and sharpness are great. I love the compositions.
Good work!.

Try it with B&W film. This lens is great with B&W, that is the reason why I am keeping it. Same for the Helios-44, very good with colours, but fantastic with B&W film.

Thanks for the tour. I had a very memorable couple of weeks there and I felt it was one of the most pleasant cities I have ever been to.
