Sigma-XQ Multi coated f=200mm 1:2.8?

Hi Everybody,

I've recently bought a set of old M42 lenses. Inside the box I also found a very heavy lens named "Sigma-XQ Multi coated f=200mm 1:2.8" (see attached pictures). The lens has 8 blades.
I can only find information about the f4 version, does anybody of you guys have any information about this lens?

Welcome to the forum! I think the first post doesn't show the images. So I am quoting yours to make them show. It should be quite rare. Although XQ series seems to be the higher end of Sigma, its optical performance leaves to be desired. Do you happen to have some test photos?

Also I remember in this forum, someone posted a copy of the brochure showing the information of XQ series.

Looks big, looks heavy. They are built like tanks!

I own a Sigma-XQ 135MM f1.8 lens (Nikon mount) and it too is very heavy. Too hard to handhold and keep steady in low light situations.

Very interested to see the pictures it will produce. If you get a chance, please post a couple to satisfy our curiosity.

I had this lens. If front system focusing (soft focus) is unused, lens is quite nice, useful performer. Contrast is lacking but detail is there.

I just made some picture and it looks verry promising. Wide open it shows som vignetting, but at F5.6 (second photo is is crazy sharp).

A few months ago I got a sample of the Sigma Multi Protel YS 1:2.8 f=200mm which looks - apart from some cosmetic differences -
the same as the Sigma XQ 2.8/200mm. It has a serial number of 73000431 which indicates that not too many were made. The lens
is pretty soft wide open, but it has much less CAs than most contemporary 2.8/200mm and 2.8/180mm lenses.
First preliminary trials indicate that its color correction is as good as e.g the famous Nikkor AiS 2.8/180mm ED.
The Sigma Multi Protel YS 1:2.8 f=200mm weighs a whopping 1.25 kg (!), and it has about the same length / diamater as the later AF Nikkor 2.8/180mm.

I you wonder where all that weight comes from ... well: there's a lot of glass inside! Here's the lens section of the Sigma XQ 2.8/200mm -
and I strongly suspect that the YS version has the same optical formula:

The reflections counted support this theory:

Front part: Five strong brownish reflexions (single coated), one weaker whitish reflexion (multi coated), one very weak reflexion (cemented surfaces)

Rear part: Four strong brownish reflexions (single coated)

Sadly the close focus mechanism of my lens - which otherwise looks pristine - doesn't work any more. Does onyone know how it should work? It seems to be same as with other close focusing lenses of the same Sigma YS / XQ Series!

Very likely the YS and XQ have the same optical formula.

Looking at the OP's images of the XQ; what I assume to be field-of-view markings, THAT is how focus scales should also be marked on all MF lenses: with a logarithmic(~ish) finer grid of markings. Now, I understand that might only be useful for more accurately setting focus if you also happen to be carrying a long tape measure (or laser distance measure), but very useful nevertheless if, on inspection of the image, you decide you need to pull focus back from, say 11m to 9.5m... (plus it looks much more scientific Wink

)

YS refers to the mount
XQ refers to Sigma XQ (High Quality? ) line of lenses.

Unless YS lens has HQ designation the optics are likely different.

+1000000 those distance scale markings on every lens!!! Smile
