I'd like to eventually get an f/1.4 50mm lens for myself, but I keep hearing concerning things about lenses like such hitting the mirror on Canon DSLRs. Does anyone have any info on this? Thanks.

PS: as title suggests, I use an old, full frame, Canon EOS 6D mk I.

The Olympus G-Zuiko 50mm 1.4 is okay on the 5D II as well.

Thanks for the list. I was unaware this issue was so prevalent and I'm rather disappointed. I wanted to eventually get maself some more Takumars like the 50mm f/1.4 or 35mm f/2 but it turns out they're incompatible even tho supposedly their flange should be longer than the canon EF flange.

Any suggestions what other full frame body within the price range of a well used 6D I could get that can adapt more lenses? Furthermore, if I'm ever to try a lens and the mirror hits, does that mean the camera is instantly ruined? Thanks.

I use a Pentax K-1 no trouble with anything hitting the mirror (there probably are lenses that do but those will be very rare). Pentax can take any K-mount lens and all m42 lenses (some Fujinons and Mamiya's need a bit of work due to proprietary adaptations) with a simple adapter. Other mounts are problematic (older Nikon glass can be mounted upside down, but again no infinity). You can adapt Exakta or m39 (Zenit) with loss of infinity it depends on focal length how far your focus is limited, but not just macro/close-up. Of course mirrorless is the way to go when adapting lenses.

Here is another list: https://www.panoramaplanet.de/comp/

I have shaved the mirror on my old 5D MKII to be more safe and allow more lenses to use. Finally I have switched to the mirrorless system camera several years ago.

I saw this one and it lists a disappointing amount of lenses as unusable. I'm really bummed out.

Sony A7 mirrorless camera should be quite cheap by now. No mirror so no issues of that sort.

You may try the Samyang 50mm f/1.4 AS UMC in EF mount....

Well, thanks for the tip. I might look to sell the 6D and perhaps invest into this. Don't really care if it's a beat up and well used copy. I mostly shoot with my full spectrum a6000 anyhow.

Meh, new lenses are no fun. I like the universality of old lenses. Plus new lenses often cost a lot more.

There are obviously exceptions but as far as autofocus lenses go, I'm fine with my old plastic fantastic EF 50mm f/1.8.

Over the years with my Canon 5D I've had the mirror hit the rear of a lens about ten times. I've never noticed any damage to the 5D or lenses.

When it happens, I just turn the camera off and turn the lens focus ring toward minimum focus distance. The mirror has always come back down and worked okay afterward.
