yes very heavy ( 6.5kg + tripod )
the new generation is only 3kg with autofocus but not the same price at all |

The nFD 2.8/400mm is actually about 5.4kg. The newest Canon EF 2.8/400mm IS II is 3.9 kg.
A substantial reduction, but not as dramatic as your numbers suggest
The EF 2.8/400mm IS II has a "normal" (probably LD) front element and two quite large fluorit elements inside. It has no CAs at all, and its performance wide open is spectacular.
The nFD 2.8/400mm L has two large UD lenses (protected by two huge & heavy planparallel filters!!), its monochromatic correction is nearly perfect, and it has little CAs at F2.8. Stopped down to f4 or f5.6, there are visible CAs, though.
