Yes, I heard about it, but I thought it was mostly a talk - well, apparently it's not talk anymore, here's the first Carl Zeiss lens (I mean, Carl Zeiss Oberkochen) in M42 mount!!:

Click here to see on Ebay

It appears to be brand new although in an Ebay auction. Well, I hope it's not a scam! If this is true, then a bright future might open for M42 lenses and especially cameras!
Yes with new Zeiss lenses in M42 mount, I think some manufacturer will probably consider releasing an M42 digital camera!

I guess this is a scam and an M42 camera only our wish. Let we see what is going on with this guy one month later, but anyway nice and interesting find!

It is no scam. The ZS lenses for M42 were announced at the same time as the ZF lenses for Nikon. They are not advertised on Zeiss pages, but if you go there and search for ZS, you get a list which includes e.g. ZF/ZS documents. Also, Google finds a lot of pages on the Web concerning or mentioning the ZS lenses.

Hi!
Actually, this is nothing new.
The ZS lenses (3 of them, I think) were announced,
with the ZF (Nikon Mount) lenses, last year.

Here's the link to the Carl Zeiss T* ZF-/ZS-Lenses manual.

By the way, I'm new to this forum. Reading a few day silently Wink

Hasan

Thanks Veijo and Hasan!
These ZS lenses really make me drool!
They really seem superior to the Contax series. I am especially curious about the ne wcolour quality, and the new focusing ring, derived from movie lenses.

Man I really want one of these!

That's right. You can get these lenses with a Nikon- or M42-mount.
But look at the price tags!!!

Wow!

Actually, EUR 500 for a brand new, top of today's technology Planar 1.4/50 is not that much. You can easily pay more for one of those those lousy Sigma mongo-bongo plastic zooms Wink

That's true! Still, 500 Euro are 500 Euro!
If you compare this to used gear in mint condition (esp. Russian lenses)...

Of course, Carsten. These are two different orders of things.

Hi, Orio!

I just have read a report about these Zeiss lenses in a German photo magazine. They were "tested" as Nikon-mount lenses (which should not be different from those with M42-mount).

The testers were fascinated by the building quality of the lens (made by Cosina, btw). They produce extremely sharp pictures with a resolution that takes the Nikon D200 to it's limits and no distortion whatsoever.
The only thing they were criticizing was some clearly visible vignetting at open apertures.

So, they said, there was no perfect lens, only very good ones and the Zeiss lenses belong to those!

As far as the prices are concerned they, correctly, compared these lenses to new Nikkors which you have to pay similar prices for!

So, that's your point, Orio, isn't it?
The prices are high but not bad for what you get!

Yes, we are talking of new lenses, so I compare the prices with new lenses.
With the EUR500 Zeiss asks for the 1.4/50, or maybe just a little less, you can buy the equivalent 1.4/50 lens by Canon or NIkon, only, made with plastic, and with synthetic material instead of the purest glass that Zeiss uses.
And with not even a 10% of the quality control that Zeiss applies to its lenses. Just ask some questions around a Canon forum, about the EF 1.4/50, and read the complaints about the faulty copies and the inconsistent quality control. And the people selling and buying the same lens over and over again until they find a good copy. I'm not joking.

Will we ever read complaints about quality control in a 1.4/50 Zeiss Planar?
I don't think so.

Having that said, it's clear that of course, any new lens will lose the price comparison against a used lens.

Putting the price aside, these lense really amazed the testers!
Those were as far as resolution, sharpness and distortion are concerned, some of the best lenses they ever shot with.
And I believe them! Wink

These lenses even look great and solid!

So far only the 1.4/50 lens is available in M42 mount. The others are only with Nikon mount. But they would be too expensive anyway (the 1.4/85 around 1500 EUR if I remember correctly). While the 1.4/50, although costing more than double a used Contax equivalent, is still within my affordability range.
The problem is that so far I have only seen those lenses in the Zeiss store - and occasionally on Japanese Ebay auctions. They have not hit the "real" stores here - the stores you can get "street prices" from.
When (if?) they do, I expect the lens to lose at least 100 Eur out of the Zeiss store price.

It is such a joy and curiousity to read threads from the pre-mirrorless era!

Great that the forum keeps all its archive, this gives an idea how fast things change. Pity that a bulk of images are lost forever in earlier server crashes. Especially when you see that many images from flickr and other public services are neither available, as accounts are deleted, servers closed, etc.

Go on and thanks to all for this wonderful encyclopedia!

It truly is a remarkable resource for aficianados....not just the archives though, the wealth of knowledge and willingness to share is phenomenal. Thanks again to all who contribute.
