Zuiko 1.4/40 on NEX5N for head shots

I have been looking forward using the "Pen-F" G.Zuiko Auto-S 40mm f1.4 for "head shots". I used to love my f1.4/50 Takumar for that, but they are not "set up" portraits but taken on the street from rather intimate distance and the 50mm often proved to be a tad too long, my fastest 35mm that only is f2 too short.

edit 5/1/2015: photos had been lost, i was able to repost the same photos in the same order again

Very sharp pictures, are all these shots wide open Shocked ? The bokeh is quite busy/unusual, I don't know if I like it or not Rolling Eyes ...Anyway, that's nice portraits and this lens seems to be a great combo with the Nex....

yes, all wide open and very sharp, and the bokeh unusual, sometimes I like it and find it a bit disturbing on sample #2

yes Patrick, the ease to get manual focus right, the quality one gets with such a small camera Wink

What's the lens on the E-P2 ?

PostPosted: Thu May 31, 2012 8:13 am    Post subject: Reply with quote

Wow, excellent performance from this lens, I also like the bokeh much, I like it better than the Takumar 1.4/50.
Fine portraits also. The skin rendition is excellent, the best I saw short of Leica lenses.

some sources I found, on E-P1:
http://www.theatreofnoise.com/2011/08/olympus-g-zuiko-40mm-f14-test-part-1.html
http://www.theatreofnoise.com/2011/08/olympus-g-zuiko-40mm-f14-test-part-2.html
http://forum.getdpi.com/forum/112825-post118.html

samples, ( mostly correctly ) filtered for results of this lens on any m4/3:

I like the bokeh in most, not all cases and couldn't say if I prefer the bokeh of either the Zuiko 1.4/50 or the Takumar 1.4/50 'in general'. They are different, imo the Tak generally smoother. Is it possible that the "catseyes" on photos taken with the Pen-F are smaller than with a lens that was made for FF 35mm film? To my eyes they often give a certain playfulness, lightness to the image.
The Zuiko quite definitely is sharper wide open ( though I should mention that for sharpening after resize I had used a new software that makes a much better job than my quite old version I had been using before )

ha, thank's Orio, that makes me confident that I have a real winner here Smile ( btw. I feel the same about the f3.5/20 "Pen-F", will show some samples later. My f2.8/25 unfortunately has a badly damaged coating on the rear glass which sometimes does effect IQ )

I think cats eyes are a relative problem, if you look at large background areas you see that this bokeh is lively and dimensional.
I like this better than the ultra-smooth flat bokeh.

Yes it looks like a very nice lens - nice contrast and real dimensionality.

I was asking if you happen to know something about the lens shown on the third picture Smile
it looks like medium tele - most probably c-mount.

oh sorry, I had misunderstood!

but that's a secret, I only talk about Pen-F lenses here Laughing just teasing...
your guess is spot on, it's a C mount f1.8/75mm. Take a closer look ( 100% crop ), can you tell which make?

thank you Carsten. I really want to give the f1.8/38 justice and use it more often too, but again I grab the 1.4/40, the faster lens suits my style better
( don't know about that.. on flickr most of these photos have received unusually little hits )

Damn it's small -
Smile i would expect it to be a f2.8 judging by the size

Awesome samples too Wink
Regarding the price unfortunately it is expensive already.

These are amazing! I feel as though I could be sitting there across from the subjects, they have such natural colour and great detail, sharpness and dimensionality.

I am very happy with this lens Smile

thank you very much stingOM
some sure show how sharp this lens is @f1.4, a few more:
( I believe that I had posted most of them already, time ago in some other thread )

well, actually after posting I saw that these above don't look all that sharp. ( focus not precise, or because hosted via flickr, not reduced in size and sharpened )
kind of head shot Wink this one may show better sharpness again:

cheers, andreas
