That does focus close for a 300. Nice bokeh too.

Thanks - I'm quite happy with it's close range performance. Not quite macro performance but very good for such a long lens (1.4m). It's very useable wide open. These were handheld, but seem sharp enough. My gut feeling is it may have the edge on my (albeit slightly faster) Nikkor 300mm 4.5 AIS but I'd need to do further tests, especially high contrast and distance tests to be sure.
