I believe this lens has a bit of a cult following, so couldn't resist when I saw it at a dealer.

Some quick snaps on my mini full framer:

f/1.2

f/2

f/1.2

Images come out of the camera with a very warm tint, I had to "cool" the portrait Shocked

Sharpness is reasonable wide open (The Nikkor 55/1.2 is better), but the bokeh is woah!

I like the close bokeh, but I'm not keen on the distance bokeh. The house, and the trees to a certain extent, looks odd somehow. But the daffodils, in both shots, look very good. Ans it is sharp. Maybe I could could get used to it. Wink

I agree about the bokeh, it's almost mirror lens weird Laughing

Try it stopped down a click or two and it will smooth right out.
Congrats on the 1.2

It's a lens I'm interested in, I'm on a Rokkor roll. But the distance bokeh did surprise me, it's very un-rokkor like to me. And doing a bit of googling the lens has a stellar reputation for its smooth bokeh, and this thread here -

is what I'd have expected, well - hoped for, with my lack of knowledge about this lens.

This lens shines at f2 where the bokeh gets super smooth at the same time as the lens sharpens up considerably. Wide open this lens is useably sharp but the bokeh can be busy.

Also remember that most pictures you will find on the net are taken with APS-C size sensors, not FF.

Some more samples by me, on a Sony a900 FF: http://forum.mflenses.com/minolta-mc-rokkor-pg-58-1-2-on-ff-sony-a900-freezing-cold-t55119,highlight,%2Brokkor.html

I know of one that is for sale at the moment and is underpriced, and will struggle to sell as it is not described correcly BIN at £180

That is the 50/1.2 not the 58/1.2

Nevertheless a fine lens at a good price. The 50/1.2 is actually sharper and more contrasty than the 58/1.2 but the bokeh can be harsher. The 58/1.2 is the more sought after lens.

Lol that did not take long to sell with me posting it, so who was the lucky buyer, I would have liked it for myself, but could not afford this month.

bokeh I find quite odd, surprisingly, after all this lens is so very famous for it. Sharpness surprised me to the upside though.
you guys will know it, but to mention that the MC Rokkor-PG f1.4/50 Rokkor that sells for a fraction is said to have the same / similar optical construction and bokeh. does anyone here own both and can confirm?

Yes,they are nearly identical, though 58/1.2 looks a bit more "special".

This lens is one of my favourites. I rather like its rendering, but I must admit it doesnt look too good in that sample you've shown. A few o my samples:

first 2 with Sony A77

and a850

Great samples, particularly the first two Smile Can you remember what apertures they were shot at? I'm wondering if the bokeh is better when used for closer portraits...

Those were wide-open. I have to say even the subject(s) were boring on the a850, the lens is much better on fullframe Smile

Very Happy Very Happy

I'm still messing around with this lens, so shot a couple of dribbley baby shots at f/1.2 and then f/2, looks OK I think.
