I have a few options on a 28mm 2.0 :

* Vivitar (Kiron) 28/2 : 60 euros
* Petri 28/2 : 60 euros
* Pentax smc 28/2.0 (aka Zeiss Hollywood) 350 euros.
All Pentax K Mount.

Can the Vivitar and the Petri compete with the Pentax ?
60 euros vs 350 euros is a big difference.
What would you do ?

I've got an old article hear from Amateur Photography in which the Kiron is tested.
It's called a 'good overal general purpose wide angle' with 'acceptable' wide open performance. Center and edge definition and contrast are 'very good' but not excellent.

I think it's definitely a good lens, but nothing spectacular. I guess the Petri isn't spectacular either. Maybe the Pentax is....
Best 28mm I ever used was a Nikkor Ai-s 28mm f/2.8, but you have a stop less.

Well if you want value for your money......does it have to be F2 as f2.8 lenses are very good....anyway the Vivitar is very soft WO and not much use, stopped down my Kiron copy is sharp but not razor sharp.

Are you using this prospective lens on a FF or APS-C or micro 4/3 camera?
Here is the Kiron Kino 28mm f2 on APS_C
It is very good.
OH

Bokeh looks very nice to me on that picture.

The Petri is a Cosina, a mediocre lens, okay stopped down. The Kiron is a good lens but it's poor wide open.

The difference between f2.0and f2.8 is negligible in practice, so you'd be much better off buying one of the excellent 2.8s. The Nikkor AI-S 2.8/28 has the reputation of being really superb and it's cheap. If your camera can use it, the Minolta 2.8/28 is superb too.

For 60 euros, I would grab the Kiron provided it is in good shape - check oil on aperture blades.
The Nikon AI-S 2.8 is a fine lens but sells for more and isn't adding much for the extra dollars in my view.
60 euros sounds like quite a sweet deal on the Kiron.
OH

F2.8 is more than adequate if you are using digital camera with good high ISO performance. If you really want a cheapest F2 lens with decent PQ, you may consider a Kiron/Komine or a Soligor C/D which both can be found on K/M42 mount.

That's too much for the Kiron imho, 20-30 euros is what I see it selling for in the UK. The Nikkor AI-S 2.8./28 sells for less than double that.

The Kiron isn't a faster lens really as it's poor wide open, needs to be shot at f4 or less.

Congratulations if you can find a Nikkor at that price, but ebay prices are much higher.

For 60 euros I'd think about a Sigma 24mm f2.8 superwide II Wink

thx for the responses. Anyone Experience with the Pentax smc 28/2.0.
I've read somewhere that is the same as the Distagon 28/2.0 Hollywood ?

Yes. The wider, the better. Wink

Yes, I've also read that. I would definitely pick one up if the prices wouldn't be insane.
Still, I doubt that the Pentax will be better than a Nikkor Ais 28/2.8, which is pretty much flawless. Question remains whether you can fit a Nikkor to your camera.

You should only buy an "cheap" ~F2 wide angle (<40mm) lens if you really really need the speed for lowlight quite often and don't have the money imho.
I've never seen a cheap and fast wide angle that didn't offend my eyes at least slightly when used wide open.
If F2.8 is enough than try to find a nice F2.8, they have a better price/perfomance ratio!

If you wan't something that is fast and good you have to pay let's say 300€ and more - but you will clearly see the difference, especially below F5.6!

Get the pentax K smc 28mm f2.0, and forget the other mentioned.

The other you should consider is zeiss 28/2, konica uc 28/1.8,
I dont have the nikon d 24/1.4, nor the nikon afs 28/1.8.

Next is nikon ais 28/2, pentax A 28/2, these are very good too.
There are other fast 28 as well, and i dont have them either...
