Hi,

below a very simple shot with D800 and my most beloved lens Leica Telyt-R 8/500mm mirror

Surely to stabilize the shot.

Impressive ship, I did expect better ISO performance , probably light was bad too.

The D800 with 36 MP is a very "nervous" cam. Better is to use always a tripod/monopod.

This cam together with a 8/500mm lens handhelded shot there is only one way - high iso to get the shortest possible exposure time.

I use all time tripod for model shoots, once I didn't use it , certainly I made more crap than ever before, my wife note it , she said if she not see tripod next time ... I can shoot alone Smile took time but now I am big fun of tripod, mono pod.

Doesn't look like noise to me, looks more like over sharpening.
But I could be wrong. Rolling Eyes

Nice shot. Iso800 should be un noticable on d800. Focusing a mirror lens near infinity is very difficult. I think you got it right.
I would use Pentax body for this type of shot or tripod. I would use 1/2000 or faster on hand hold.

To make it clear,

a) this shot was taken at bad light condition
b) with this combo you must have a very short exposure time
c) the distance to the ship was around 3-4 km
d) so this is a crop of more nearly 200 %
e) and yes, you have to sharpen such a senario to see something

My intention was not to show any quality or not quality of this image. You should only look on this image without thinking too much on image quality.

Nice moody image! Only looks noisy up close and I suspect that's due to a crop Smile

I think the result is not bad for a mirror lens in bad condition. A black and white version may be more nice.

When only I saw the title The Ship I said to myself : "That's Rolf !" Laughing Seems I was a good guesser Smile
Hi , Rolf ! Thanks for sharing , impressive result thinking of the distance and light and handheld technique with no IS I would be curious how does it performs on a stabilised body . Anyway that f8 requests longer exposure or higher Iso...or tripod .have you used it on the k5?
