Just a test picture, which I post here because of the large size.

Wide open ( f/2.8 ), hand-held (M9), strong wind.

100% crop:

RAW file developed in Capture One Pro 7

wow! orio that red is amazing! almost every camera ive ever had--canon, sony, oly panny, fuji-- cannot render red properly. i cant wait to see more from this combo. ive heard the zeiss 25 is one of the best ever, and it sure shows a lot of promise in that direction.

Yes Tony, one of the best lenses today. Two years of painful savings and sacrifices to buy it!!! But it's going to become my
single most used lens from now on. I say this because the Voigtlaender 25mm used to be my most used lens
in this last year, when I shot a lot more street photography film than digital and it was on my Zeiss Ikon almost permanently.
I expect the Biogon to be a killer on film. It has an incredible contrast. In days like today, with bright sunlight, on digital camera,
perhaps even too much. But on film, and especially in dim light, it's going to save a lot of pictures.
For the colour, the credit goes to the lens but also to the software, Capture One Pro 7. It has become my favourite
RAW program image quality-wise. Lightroom still leads for ease of catalogation. But image wise C1P7 has an edge
today in image quality and colour, in my opinion.

superb colors, can you use your colorchecker profiles with capture one ?

PostPosted: Tue May 21, 2013 6:51 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

That's one of my dream lenses for my M8.
Thanks for showing me why. Wink

I'm not sure, maybe yes if I create an ICC in the normal way. It's something I have not explored yet.
But like you have noticed, C1Pro7 handles the M9 colours better than Lightroom does without colorchecker.

Finally, a close-up test, wide open, to test background separation and bokeh.
I was at about 1 mt distance, not the closest possible which is 0,5 mt (quite remarkable for a rangefinder lens).

That's what I was thinking, why bother with 35mm film.

Well, it seems (because the page does not appear to be online at Zeiss site anymore) that Zeiss claimed
for the Biogon 25 a 400 lines per millimeter resolution on SPUR-Orthopan UR film:

http://theonlinephotographer.blogspot.it/2006/03/zeiss-reports-highest-ever-lens.html

Who knows if really true - if true, then surely something obtaineable in laboratory environment only.
Maybe just marketing hype, but even if it was only half the truth, it'd still be stellar.
For sure, none of the lenses that I have/had so far has even come close to a performance such as
that of the farmers crop (pun intended Laughing )

Now on for some real photography - hopefully next weekend!

the test seems easy, they just scotch a test chart on a window

Zeiss wrote:
The resolution test chart was placed in the center of the frame, and the negatives were inspected directly on a research microscope. No other process involving projection (through even the best enlarging lens) or digitizing (in today’s best currently available scanners) is capable of transferring such high resolution values.

this is the Zeiss article from 24 february 2006
Quote:

Resolving Power Record with ZEISS Biogon T* 2,8/25 ZM

When Hasselblad staff photographer Jens Karlsson took demo photos for the first Zeiss Ikon brochure in 2004, his photo of the carousel, taken with the ZM-Biogon 25 stood out for its enormous detail and clarity. So we used a ZM-Biogon 25 in a recent test to determine maximum resolving power. The high resolution film of choice was the SPUR Orthopan UR supplied and processed by SPUR.

The result was a whopping 400 lp/mm on film, recorded with the Biogon 25 at f/4 in the center of the image. This value, 400 lp/mm, corresponds to the maximum resolution theoretically possible at f/4; in other words it represents the calculated “diffraction limited” performance at this aperture. It is noteworthy that this test was conducted with a production lens on a production camera, indicating that the film was precisely positioned and flat.

Let’s just say that this test is relevant to everyday photography the same way the top speed of a Formula 1 race car relates to everyday personal transportation. Of course, many people enjoy watching Formula 1 races ...

It is lens that was built without agreeing on any compromise. Probably design process was hidden from accounting and financial dept Wink

And yet it's priced exactly like the 24-105 f/4 Canon L zoom, which is slower, it's plastic, has horrible distortion and it's
mass-produced (as opposed to faster, metal-and-glass, low distortion and individually-crafted Biogon) Wink

B&W digital conversion test, in a very challenging light situation ( about 6 stops difference between highlights and shadows)
Conversion done using colour sliders of Capture One Pro 7
Photo taken at f/4

Lovely shot, very tastefully processed

The T* coating on the ZM series is really incredible - the zm series blow away most of the Voigtlander/Leica M mount lenses

On top of this all, the 25/2.8 is probably the crown jewel of the zm series
